What it is
Chroma is a vector database: it stores embeddings (number lists that represent text meaning) and finds the closest matches for a query. It can run inside a Python process with no setup, or as a standalone server. The core is written in Rust. The latest tagged release is 1.5.9 from 5 May 2026, though commits to the main branch continue.
It supports metadata filters and full-text search alongside vector search, and most RAG frameworks include a Chroma integration. There are two deployment modes, single-node local and distributed, with separate storage for now. Since 1.5.4 Chroma no longer collects product telemetry.
Chroma Cloud runs the same open-source distributed system and is billed by data written, stored, queried and returned.
Our review
Chroma still owns the first hour of a RAG project: pip install chromadb, create a collection, add documents, query, all in-process with no server. The caveat in late 2026 is cadence. Version 1.5.9 on 5 May is both the latest GitHub tag and the latest PyPI release, after 1.5.8 in April, even though the main branch was still receiving commits in October.
The architecture explains some of Chroma's behaviour. Single-node local Chroma and the distributed system use separate storage, and Chroma's own docs warn that local mode may temporarily lack features the distributed system has; the hosted cloud runs the distributed code. Privacy improved in 1.5.4, which stopped product telemetry entirely. Earlier versions sent anonymous usage events to PostHog by default, so long-pinned deployments are worth checking.
Chroma Cloud's pricing suits data that is written once and read often. Writes cost $2.50 per GiB and storage $0.33 per GiB-month, while queries are $0.0075 per TiB scanned; Chroma's own example of 1M documents written, 6M stored and 10M queries comes to about $79 a month. Re-embedding a corpus repeatedly is the expensive pattern. SOC 2 is listed only on Team at $250 a month, single-tenant and BYOC clusters only on Enterprise, SSO on no plan, and service pauses when a usage limit is reached.
Against Qdrant, which reviewers credit with stronger filtered search at large scale, Chroma's lead is ergonomic rather than technical. The embedded mode that makes tutorials so short is also the mode that, by Chroma's own account, may trail the distributed system's features.
Where it earns its place
A Python developer building a RAG prototype on a laptop
Get semantic search over a few thousand documents working in an afternoon
pip install chromadb, create a persistent client and add documents, with no server or account. Cost is nil, and the same client API carries over to a Chroma server or Chroma Cloud later.
A two-person startup running a documentation assistant in production
Host a read-heavy index without running database servers
On Chroma Cloud, Chroma's example of 1M documents written, 6M stored and 10M queries costs about $79 a month. Starter has $5 of credits and no SOC 2; a customer who asks for SOC 2 moves you to Team at $250 a month plus usage.
A platform engineer at a regulated firm
Keep vector data inside the company's own cloud account
Self-host the Apache 2.0 server, or buy Enterprise for single-tenant or BYOC clusters at custom pricing. Self-hosting means owning upgrades on a project whose last tag is from May 2026.
Before you commit
- Setup
- pip install chromadb (Python 3.9+) and run it in-process, or start the server for client-server use. No GPU is needed unless you also compute embeddings locally.
- Integrations
- Python and JavaScript clients, integrations in most RAG frameworks including LangChain and LlamaIndex, metadata filters and full-text search alongside vectors, and OpenTelemetry for your own monitoring.
- Data and privacy
- No product telemetry since 1.5.4; OpenTelemetry data is never shared with Chroma. Self-hosted data stays on your machines. On Cloud, SOC 2 is listed for Team and Enterprise adds single-tenant and BYOC clusters. GitHub lists no published security advisories.
- Cost at scale
- Self-hosting costs only the server. Cloud usage is $2.50 per GiB written, $0.33 per GiB-month stored, $0.0075 per TiB queried and $0.09 per GiB returned; Team adds $250 a month with $100 of non-rolling credit.
- Limits
- 964 open issues and pull requests, and no tagged release since 5 May 2026. Hitting a cloud usage limit pauses service until it is raised; local mode may lack features of the distributed system.
What's good
- Runs in-process with zero setup
- Small API and wide framework support
- No product telemetry since 1.5.4
- Usage-billed cloud with a $0 Starter plan and cheap queries
What's not
- No tagged release since May 2026
- Cloud writes cost $2.50/GiB, so re-indexing is expensive
- Local mode may lag distributed features
- SOC 2 only from the $250 Team plan; SSO not listed
Best for
Developers prototyping RAG or running small to mid-size vector search.
Alternatives
Chroma: common questions
- Is Chroma worth it?
- Quick to embed and cheap to host for read-heavy RAG, though nothing has been tagged since May 2026. We rate it 4.1 out of 5.
- How much does Chroma cost?
- Free and open source under Apache 2.0. Chroma Cloud: Starter $0 plus usage with $5 credits; Team $250/month plus usage; Enterprise custom. Writes $2.50/GiB, storage $0.33/GiB-month.
- What are the downsides of Chroma?
- No tagged release since May 2026; cloud writes cost $2.50/GiB, so re-indexing is expensive; local mode may lag distributed features; sOC 2 only from the $250 Team plan; SSO not listed.
- Who is Chroma best for?
- Developers prototyping RAG or running small to mid-size vector search.
- How much does Chroma cost for a team or in production?
- Self-hosting costs only the server. Cloud usage is $2.50 per GiB written, $0.33 per GiB-month stored, $0.0075 per TiB queried and $0.09 per GiB returned; Team adds $250 a month with $100 of non-rolling credit.
- Is Chroma safe for company data?
- No product telemetry since 1.5.4; OpenTelemetry data is never shared with Chroma. Self-hosted data stays on your machines. On Cloud, SOC 2 is listed for Team and Enterprise adds single-tenant and BYOC clusters. GitHub lists no published security advisories.
- What are the best Chroma alternatives?
- The closest alternatives we have reviewed are Qdrant and LlamaIndex.
