4.5/5

Pydantic AI brings the discipline of typed Python to agents, at the cost of a release train you have to pin.

What it is

Pydantic AI is an agent framework from the team behind Pydantic, the data validation library most Python AI SDKs depend on. It uses Python type hints so that tool inputs and agent outputs are validated, and editors can catch mistakes before you run the code.

Version 2 went stable on 23 June 2026. It is built around capabilities: composable bundles of tools, hooks, instructions and model settings. A separate Pydantic AI Harness package adds memory, guardrails, sub-agents, planning, context management and a complete coding agent, and durable execution, so agents survive restarts, runs on eight engines including Temporal, DBOS and Prefect.

It is model-agnostic and emits plain OpenTelemetry traces, which work with any backend or with Pydantic Logfire, the company's paid observability product.

Our review

Pydantic AI is the agent framework for code that has to be maintained, not just demoed. It has about 20,800 GitHub stars, an MIT licence and released v2.60.0 on 23 October 2026. Tool arguments and structured outputs are validated against Pydantic models, so a malformed model response fails loudly instead of flowing into your database, and dependency injection lets tests swap in test models.

The release pace is extraordinary: 25 V2 minor versions between v2.36.0 on 29 August and v2.60.0 on 23 October, while V1 still receives patches (v1.107.9 on 21 October). Pinning versions is not optional. The security record shows why: 19 published advisories, 13 of them since August 2026, mostly in the web-fetch tool (SSRF blocklist bypasses, event-loop stalls on hostile HTML) and in UI adapters, where one let a client-submitted tool call execute.

V2 changed the framework's shape. Capabilities bundle tools, instructions, hooks and settings into units you list on an agent, and the Harness package now supplies memory, sub-agents, planning, guardrails and a ready-made coding agent, which narrows the gap with CrewAI and Agno on prebuilt patterns. Durable execution is unusually broad, with eight engines from Temporal, DBOS and Prefect to AWS Lambda and Airflow, five of them co-maintained with the engine vendors. Tutorials written for V1 often no longer match.

The commercial pull is towards Pydantic's own products, though nothing forces it. Instrumentation is plain OpenTelemetry, so any tracing backend works; Logfire is free up to 10 million records a month for one person and $49 a month for teams, with $2 per extra million. The Pydantic AI Gateway offers one key for many providers with a 5% markup on built-in providers and none on your own keys, which buys budgets and failover at the price of another hop between the agent and the model.

Where it earns its place

  • A Python backend team at a logistics company

Extract typed shipment data from emails and PDFs into their database

Define the output as a Pydantic model and let the agent retry when validation fails, so bad rows never reach the database. No framework cost; the bill is model tokens, and validation retries add to it.

  • A platform engineer whose company already runs Temporal

Run long agent jobs that survive deploys and crashes

Add the TemporalDurability capability so every model and tool call becomes a Temporal activity. No new infrastructure beyond the existing cluster; the risk is tracking a fast-moving integration across releases that land several times a week.

  • An engineering manager at a 15-person AI startup

Get traces and cost visibility for agents in production

Send the built-in OpenTelemetry traces to Logfire Team at $49 a month for 10 million records and five seats, then $2 per extra million, or to an existing backend at no extra licence cost.

Before you commit

Setup
uv add pydantic-ai (or pip) on Python 3.11 or later; a typed agent with one tool is a few lines. Extras such as pydantic-ai[temporal] and pydantic-ai-harness are separate installs.
Integrations
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry, Groq, Mistral, xAI, Ollama and dozens more; MCP; AG-UI and Vercel AI UI streams; realtime voice; Temporal, DBOS, Prefect, Restate, AWS Lambda and Airflow for durability.
Data and privacy
A library: data goes to the model providers and trace exporters you configure. MIT licence. A September advisory found include_content=False did not redact exceptions or instructions from traces, so check what your exporter receives.
Cost at scale
The framework is free. Logfire Personal is free up to 10 million records a month; Team is $49 a month with 10 million records and $2 per extra million. The AI Gateway charges a 5% markup on built-in providers and none on your own keys.
Limits
Very fast release cadence with V1 and V2 maintained in parallel; about 1,500 open issues and pull requests; no visual builder.

What's good

  • Validated tool inputs and structured outputs
  • Model-agnostic across dozens of providers
  • Durable execution on eight engines
  • Agents are easy to unit test

What's not

  • Several releases a week; pinning is essential
  • 19 security advisories, mostly in web-fetch and UI adapters
  • V2 moved extras into a separate Harness package
  • Python 3.11 or newer required

Best for

Python engineers building production agents who want strong typing, testability and freedom to switch models.
