What it is
Godot MCP connects AI agents to the Godot game engine. The agent can launch the editor on a project, run the project in debug mode, capture console output and errors, stop it, create scenes with a chosen root node, add nodes with properties, load sprites, export 3D scenes as MeshLibrary resources for GridMap, save scenes and manage UIDs on Godot 4.4 and later.
Simple operations use Godot's own command line; complex ones go through a single bundled GDScript file. It installs with npx @coding-solo/godot-mcp, set GODOT_PATH if Godot is not found. MIT-licensed with 6,316 stars, it has no tagged releases; the last push was 16 April 2026, and 75 issues are open.

An agent editing GDScript blind can only guess whether a jump now feels right or a scene loads at all. Godot MCP lets it run the project, read the debug output and errors, change something and run it again, which is the loop that makes agents useful anywhere.
Scene tools go beyond text files: the agent can create scenes, add nodes with properties, load sprites and export MeshLibrary resources, using a bundled GDScript so changes go through Godot rather than hand-edited .tscn files.
It has become the default Godot server, with over 6,000 stars, but activity has slowed: no commits since April 2026, no tagged releases and 75 open issues. It also cannot see the running game's visuals, so judging how something looks or feels is still your job.
Rivals go wider: Godot MCP Pro, a separate project, sells 162 tools for a one-off $15, and Godot-MCP-Native runs as a plugin inside the editor. This one's advantage is that it is a single npx command and stays out of your project.
Where it earns its place
A solo indie developer building a 2D platformer
Fix a jump that triggers twice
claude mcp add godot -- npx @coding-solo/godot-mcp; ask the agent to reproduce the bug, read the debug output, patch the script and rerun. Free.
A game-jam team of three
Scaffold levels and scenes quickly
Have the agent create scenes, add nodes and export a MeshLibrary for GridMap level building, then refine in the editor.
Before you commit
- Setup
- claude mcp add godot -- npx @coding-solo/godot-mcp; add -e GODOT_PATH=/path/to/godot if needed. Cline and Cursor configs are documented.
- Integrations
- Claude Code, Cline, Cursor and other stdio MCP clients; Godot 4 (UID tools need 4.4+).
- Data and privacy
- Runs locally against your Godot install and project files. MIT.
- Limits
- Inactive since April 2026; Cursor needs its Agent profile for MCP tools; no visual feedback from the running game.
What's good
- Run, debug and read errors in a loop
- Scene and node edits go through Godot itself
- One-command install with npx
- Widely used, with 6,000+ stars
What's not
- No commits since April 2026 and 75 open issues
- No tagged releases to pin
- Cannot see rendered gameplay
Best for
Godot developers who use a coding agent and want it to test changes by running the game.

- What are the downsides of Godot MCP?
- No commits since April 2026 and 75 open issues; no tagged releases to pin; cannot see rendered gameplay.
- Who is Godot MCP best for?
