What it is
Snyk's MCP server ships inside the Snyk CLI and is the engine of Snyk Studio, the company's product for securing AI-assisted coding. You start it with npx -y snyk@latest mcp -t stdio. It runs locally only; Snyk's docs state that it does not offer a hosted remote MCP server.
The README lists 13 tools: scans for Snyk Code (static analysis of your own code), open-source dependencies, infrastructure-as-code, containers, SBOM files and secrets, plus snyk_aibom (an AI bill of materials), snyk_package_health_check, snyk_trust for approving a folder before scanning, and sign-in, sign-out, status and version tools. A lite profile keeps only the code and dependency scans plus housekeeping; full (the default) adds the rest, and an experimental profile adds tools still under evaluation.
For Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot, Snyk offers an installer script that also installs uv, Python, Node.js and the CLI, and sets up hooks and rules so the agent scans new AI-generated code automatically. Sign-in happens in the browser with a Snyk account.

Asking an agent to scan its own output and fix what it finds is one of the more practical uses of MCP, and Snyk brings an established scanner to it. Because the server is the Snyk CLI, it works on local files, and one server covers code, dependencies, IaC, containers, SBOMs and secrets, a breadth few security servers match.
The defaults are where the bill comes from. Snyk's quickstarts set the Secure at Inception frequency to run on every code generation and tell the agent to rescan until no new issues remain. On Free that draws from 100 Snyk Code tests a month, and the docs' answer to running out is to contact sales. Team raises the allowance to 1,000 tests from $25 a month for up to 10 developers, though the pricing page does not say whether that $25 is per developer. Enterprise moves to credits at $1 each, charged per active contributor per day: 1 credit for Code and 1 for open source.
Two side effects deserve a line in any rollout note. Snyk Code temporarily clones or uploads your code for analysis and caches it under Snyk's retention policy, which the quickstart links to but does not summarise. Dependency scans may run Gradle, Maven or other build tools on your machine to resolve the tree, which means executing the project's build logic; snyk_trust exists so that only approved folders are scanned.
The repository is Apache-2.0 but closed to public contributions and publishes no tagged releases, since the code ships with the CLI. Snyk's agent-specific Evo features, including Coding Agent Security at one credit per active machine per day, need an Enterprise subscription, so Free and Team users get the scanner without the AI governance layer Snyk markets alongside it.
