What is Doubao Seed 2.1 Pro?
Doubao Seed 2.1 Pro is ByteDance's flagship model, released on 23 June 2026 at its Volcano Engine conference with a cheaper Seed 2.1 Turbo. It powers ByteDance's Doubao assistant, China's most-used AI app, and its TRAE coding tools. It reads text, images and video and writes text, with a reasoning (deep thinking) mode. Weights and parameter counts are not published.
The June build has a 256K context; a September build (doubao-seed-2-1-pro-260915) raised it to 1 million tokens at the same price. On Volcano Engine Ark, ByteDance's China cloud, Pro costs ¥6 per million input tokens and ¥30 per million output tokens, ¥1.20 for cached input, and half price on batch. Turbo costs half as much again.
Outside China, ByteDance sells through BytePlus ModelArk, which serves from Malaysia and Indonesia. ModelArk lists Seed 2.1 Turbo (as Dola-Seed-2.1-turbo) at $0.50 input and $2.50 output per million tokens, but Pro does not appear in its published price list.

Is Doubao Seed 2.1 Pro worth it?
Seed 2.1 Pro's standout is vision. On ByteDance's own tables it leads Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5.5 and Gemini 3.1 Pro on most image tests it lists, by wide margins on perception (73.7 on BabyVision against 55.9 for GPT-5.5) and spatial reasoning (72.0 on ERQA). On video it beats Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro on all five benchmarks shown, including 89.2 on VideoMME for long video.
On text, coding and agent work it is close behind the closed frontier of early summer rather than ahead. It scores 71.0 on Terminal Bench 2.1 against 71.7 for Opus 4.7 and 73.8 for GPT-5.5, and trails both on the SWE-Atlas debugging test and the xDailyBench office-work test. These are ByteDance's figures; Artificial Analysis has published no score for its flagship, so there is no independent check.
The price is competitive inside China: ¥6 in and ¥30 out per million tokens, with a 1M-token context since September. The problem is access elsewhere. BytePlus ModelArk, ByteDance's international platform, lists only Turbo at $0.50/$2.50, and OpenRouter carries Turbo but not Pro.
BytePlus's data terms are clearer than most Chinese providers'. ModelArk says it acts as a processor and will not use customer data for its own training without prior authorisation, with data processed in Malaysia and Indonesia. For teams that need strong video understanding and can work through Volcano Engine or Turbo, it is worth testing.
