What is Roboflow?
Roboflow (Y Combinator Summer 2020) is a platform for teaching software to see. You upload photos or video, label what matters (a dent, a pallet, a hard hat), train a model such as RF-DETR or YOLO, and run it through Roboflow's cloud API or on your own hardware with its free open-source Inference server. Roboflow Universe hosts public datasets and pre-trained models to start from.
Pricing runs on credits. The free tier gives 10 a month, which Roboflow says is enough to train about 30 models or run about 80,000 cloud predictions; Core plans start at $39 a month for 20 credits. Roboflow raised a $40M Series B led by GV in November 2024, when it said more than 25,000 organisations used it, including several Fortune 100 companies.
How much does Roboflow cost?
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | 10 credits a month, private projects, model weight downloads |
| Core | $39 to $1,399/month | 20 to 500 credits a month |
| Enterprise | Custom | SSO, audit logs, EU or US storage, HIPAA BAA, edge deployment add-ons |
Free (10 credits/month); Core from $39/month (20 credits) up to $1,399/month (500 credits), $3.90 to $2.86 per credit; Enterprise custom. Self-hosted inference free on every plan.
Is Roboflow worth it?
Counting boxes on a conveyor or spotting missing hard hats on a site camera sounds like a job for AI, until you discover it starts with labelling hundreds of photos by hand.
Roboflow covers the whole route. You upload images, label them with AI-assisted tools, train a model with a click, and either call it over the internet or run it on a camera box on site. Its own figures put the free 10 monthly credits at about 30 training runs or 80,000 cloud predictions, which is plenty to find out whether the idea works.
Running models on your own hardware is free on every plan, which is the part that changes the maths for factories. Cloud predictions on small models cost about 0.000125 credits an image, roughly 8,000 images per credit, so a $39 Core plan stretches a long way for occasional checks. Continuous video on a nano model uses 0.1 credits an hour.
The catch: new workspaces let Roboflow use your data to improve its products by default, and an admin has to turn that off under project settings. Included credits do not roll over, prepaid packs expire after a year, and running Ultralytics YOLO models commercially on your own machines needs an Enterprise add-on. SSO, audit logs and a HIPAA agreement are Enterprise-only too.
Our take: for a first vision project, Roboflow is where to prove the idea on the free tier; teams with ML engineers on staff and nothing to label may find Hugging Face and their own training scripts cheaper once the project is real.
Where it earns its place
A quality engineer at a 200-person plastics manufacturer
Flag defective parts on the line from a camera feed
Label a few hundred defect photos, train RF-DETR, and run it on a local device with free self-hosted Inference so the line does not depend on the internet. Commercial use of Ultralytics YOLO on site would need Enterprise.
A developer at a property-inspection app
Detect roof damage in photos homeowners upload
Call the hosted API: at about 8,000 nano-model images per credit, 100,000 photos a month uses around 13 credits, inside the $39 Core plan's 20.
A researcher at a university ecology lab
Count animals in camera-trap images
The Research plan is for non-commercial work, but its projects are public on Roboflow Universe, so it suits open datasets rather than unpublished ones.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Sign up free with no card, upload images, label with AI-assisted tools, train with one click, and test in the browser before calling the API or installing Inference locally.
- Integrations
- Hosted REST API, the open-source Roboflow Inference server for your own hardware, model weight downloads, and on Enterprise MQTT, OPC and PLC triggers for factory equipment.
- Data and privacy
- New workspaces allow Roboflow to use your data to improve its products by default; any admin can switch this off free of charge. Enterprise workspaces are always private, never used for training, and can choose US or EU storage.
- Cost at scale
- Core tops out at $1,399 a month for 500 credits ($2.86 each). Continuous cloud video on a nano model at 0.1 credits an hour is about 72 credits a month per camera, so the $349 tier's 120 credits covers fewer than two cameras running around the clock; self-hosting avoids that charge entirely.
- Limits
- Credits reset monthly with no rollover; payment by card in USD unless on Enterprise; labelling services cost extra from $0.05 a label.
What's good
- Labelling, training and deployment in one place
- Self-hosted inference free on every plan
- Free tier covers about 30 training runs a month
- Model weights downloadable even on Free
- Large public library of datasets and models on Universe
What's not
- Your data can be used to improve Roboflow's products unless an admin opts out
- Included credits do not roll over; packs expire after a year
- Commercial self-hosted YOLO needs an Enterprise add-on
- SSO, audit logs and HIPAA BAA only on Enterprise
- Vision-language models cost far more credits than detectors
Best for
Operations, manufacturing and product teams who need a custom object-detection or inspection model without building an ML pipeline.

Roboflow: common questions
- Is Roboflow worth it?
- Roboflow takes a factory or warehouse team from a folder of photos to a working detection model faster than anything else, provided someone switches off its default right to use your images. We rate it 4.3 out of 5.
