The split is breadth against depth. ChatGPT covers more ground, including native image generation, custom GPTs and an $8 Go tier; Claude is generally preferred for long documents, editing and careful code, but heavy users hit its usage caps sooner. Both charge $20 a month for the plan most people should buy.
ChatGPT is the assistant that does a bit of everything; Claude does fewer things with more care. ChatGPT bundles chat, web search, file analysis, image generation, voice, deep research, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and the Codex agent, and since October 2026 its Intelligent UI can put charts, forms and small tools into answers. Claude offers chat, files, web search, Artifacts, Research, Claude in Chrome, scheduled tasks and connectors to Google Drive and Microsoft 365, but no native image or video generation.
On quality the user reports point the other way. People on Reddit and Hacker News regularly rank Claude first for long documents, editing and careful code changes, and Opus 5.5's 1M-token context window lets it read very large documents or codebases in one go. ChatGPT Plus users chat with GPT-6 Sol, but the strongest model, GPT-6 Astra, is reserved for ChatGPT Work and Codex, and GPT-6 Pro in regular chat needs a Pro or Business tier.
The plans differ in temperament. Claude's line-up is simpler: Free with Sonnet and Haiku, Pro at $20 with Opus, Claude Code and Research, and Max from $100, which since October 2026 includes $100 or $200 a month in API credits. ChatGPT runs from an ad-supported Go tier at $8 to three Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500, and what you get depends heavily on the plan. Both ration their best model: Claude's Fable 5.1 runs only on paid usage credits on Pro and is capped at half of weekly limits on Max.
Each has one complaint that comes up again and again. For Claude it is limits: Reddit threads report heavy users hitting the 5-hour session cap and the weekly cap more often than on ChatGPT. For ChatGPT it is confusion: the model picker and per-plan limits trip up new users, and the line-up keeps moving. If you would use an assistant for images, voice and errands as much as for writing, ChatGPT is the better buy. If text and code are the job, Claude is.
