What it is
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant for web, desktop and mobile. It chats, writes, analyses files, searches the web, builds small apps and documents (Artifacts), and connects to outside tools such as Google Drive or Microsoft 365.
The current models are Haiku 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1. Fable is Anthropic's top tier, above Opus, and is rationed on most plans. Every paid plan includes Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, plus Research and Claude in Chrome, all drawing on the same usage pool as chat.
Max plans include monthly Claude API credits ($100 or $200), and Team plans include up to $500 a month in pooled API credits, which matters for people who build on the API as well as chat.
Our review
Claude's reputation rests on the quality of its writing and its coding. Users on Reddit and Hacker News regularly rank it first for long documents, editing and careful code changes, and Claude Code, included on every paid plan, has become one of the most used coding agents. Opus 5.5, released in September 2026, reads up to 1M tokens, enough for a large codebase or a stack of contracts in one go.
The plans are simpler than ChatGPT's but not simple. Pro at $20 a month adds Opus, Claude Code and Research. Max starts at $100 for five times Pro's usage per 5-hour session and includes $100 or $200 a month in API credits. Fable 5.1, the strongest model, is the catch: on Pro it runs only on paid usage credits, and on Max and Team Premium seats it is limited to half of your weekly allowance. Anthropic publishes no fixed message counts, only multiples of other plans.
For companies the structure has improved. Team seats cost $20 a month on annual billing, include SSO, admin controls for connectors and no training on your data by default, and come with up to $500 a month in pooled API credits. Enterprise switches to a $20 seat fee plus usage at API rates, with a 20-seat minimum, adding SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API, custom retention and IP allowlisting. Anthropic's trust centre lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 for Team and Enterprise; HIPAA is Enterprise-only.
The complaint that will not go away is limits. Reddit threads report heavy users hitting the 5-hour and weekly caps sooner than on ChatGPT, and the Enterprise usage model shifts that risk onto the buyer's API bill. Claude also has no native image or video generation, which ChatGPT and Gemini both offer. For a team whose output is text and code, those gaps cost less than the quality difference on the work itself.
Where it earns its place
A backend engineer at a 15-person startup
Make multi-file refactors in a large repository from the terminal
Claude Code reads the repo with Opus 5.5's 1M-token window and proposes diffs for review. Pro at $20 covers occasional sessions; daily agent use usually needs Max at $100, which also includes $100 a month in API credits.
A 12-lawyer commercial practice
Review and redline long contracts without client data training a model
Team Standard seats at $20/user/month on annual billing come to $240 a month, with SSO and no training by default. Custom retention and audit logs are Enterprise-only, so a firm with strict record rules needs at least 20 seats.

Roll out Claude with provisioning and an audit trail
Enterprise costs $20 a seat a month, billed annually, plus usage at API rates, with SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API and IP allowlisting. The seat fee is $6,000 a month before usage, and usage is the number to forecast.
