ChatGPT vs Google Gemini

Gemini is the better buy for households already on Google, because the same $20 also brings 5 TB of storage and Gmail and Docs integration; for everyone else, ChatGPT remains the better single assistant.

At $20 a month the two cost the same, so the question is what else you want in the bundle. Google AI Pro adds 5 TB of storage, Workspace features and Flow video credits; ChatGPT Plus adds a wider, more even feature set, including custom GPTs and the Codex coding agent. Neither gives free users its best model.

This is a choice about ecosystems more than models. Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month costs the same as ChatGPT Plus, but it also bundles 5 TB of storage, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, Flow video credits and higher Gemini Notebook limits. For a household already paying for Google One, that is hard to beat. ChatGPT Plus at $20 buys only the assistant, but it is the broadest one: chat, search, files, images, voice, deep research, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and the Codex coding agent in one place.

The quality gap has narrowed. According to Google's blog, Gemini 4 Argon reached Pro and Ultra subscribers on October 13, 2026 with a 1M-token context window, and Google says it hedges less and follows style instructions better. ChatGPT moved its paid plans to GPT-6 Sol the same month and added Intelligent UI, which puts charts, forms and small tools into answers. In most user reports Gemini still trails Claude for long-form writing, and ChatGPT remains the more even all-rounder.

Both have made limits harder to read. Since May 2026, Gemini's personal accounts get a compute budget that refreshes every five hours up to a weekly cap, which reviewers say is harder to predict than the old daily prompt counts. ChatGPT's model picker and per-plan limits are a frequent complaint on Reddit, and its top model, GPT-6 Astra, sits only in ChatGPT Work and Codex. At the top end, Gemini Ultra costs $99.99 or $199.99 a month; ChatGPT Pro runs to $100, $200 or $500.

What each does worse: Gemini's many surfaces (the app, Search AI Mode, Notebook, Workspace) can feel scattered, its free tier stays on lighter Flash-Lite models, and prices vary by country. ChatGPT's free plan and Go tier carry ads, and its line-up keeps shifting. If your mail, documents and files already live with Google, Gemini is the better value. If they do not, the storage is no reason to switch, and ChatGPT is the more focused buy.
