What it is
Gemini is Google's AI assistant on the web, Android, iPhone and inside Google apps like Gmail and Docs. It chats, runs Deep Research, generates images and video, and holds live voice conversations (Gemini Live).
On October 13, 2026, Google rolled out Gemini 4 Argon, its newest frontier model, to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The same update added a tasks mode that keeps Gemini working on a job after you leave, with connections to more than 40 outside apps such as Instacart, OpenTable and Shopify. Free users get Flash-Lite models; Plus gets Flash.
Gemini is sold as part of Google AI plans, which also bundle Google One storage, Flow video credits and, on Ultra, Project Genie. Companies buy it separately as Gemini Enterprise, from $21 per seat a month.
Our review
Gemini's case rests on the bundle rather than the model. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month in the US, the same as ChatGPT Plus, but the plans page shows it also carries 5 TB of Google One storage, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, 1,000 Flow video credits and YouTube Premium Lite. A household already paying for 2 TB of storage is, in effect, being offered an assistant at a small mark-up.
The model gap has narrowed. Google's October 13 post says Gemini 4 Argon answers more directly, hedges less and reports progress on long jobs; the plans page lists a 1M-token context window on Pro. Free accounts stay on Flash-Lite and $4.99 Plus gets Flash, so the cheaper tiers are a different product, not a slower version of the same one.
Limits are where Google asks for trust. Since May 2026 the app measures compute rather than prompts: an allowance that refreshes every 5 hours until a weekly cap, with Pro at 4x the free level and the two Ultra plans at 5x and 20x Pro. Google publishes the multipliers but not the underlying numbers, and a long Deep Research run or a video job eats the allowance faster than a chat.
Privacy defaults deserve a careful read. On personal accounts, Keep Activity is on, chats are kept for 18 months, and Google says it uses them to train its models; a sample is read by human reviewers and those chats are kept for up to three years even after you delete your history. Turning activity off cuts retention to 72 hours but also disables connected apps such as Workspace. Gemini Enterprise, at $21 a seat, carries the opposite promise: customer data is not used for training.
The surfaces remain scattered. Gemini lives in the app, in Search's AI Mode, in Notebook, in Workspace and now in Antigravity on the Mac, and each is documented separately. ChatGPT feels like one product by comparison, and Claude still draws the stronger reports for long-form writing.
Where it earns its place
A family of four sharing a 2 TB Google One plan
Get a paid AI assistant without adding another subscription
Moving to AI Pro at $19.99 a month raises storage to 5 TB and adds Argon, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and YouTube Premium Lite. The saving only holds if the storage was already being bought.
A 60-person agency on Google Workspace
Roll out an assistant without staff chats training Google models
Personal accounts train on activity by default, so buy Gemini Enterprise Business at $21 a seat ($1,260 a month), which Google says is not used for training and connects to Workspace, Microsoft 365, HubSpot and Jira. That tier tops out at 300 seats.
A product analyst who reads long reports and contracts
Summarise and question 500-page documents in one go
AI Pro's 1M-token context fits most single documents whole. Deep Research and long chats spend the 5-hour allowance faster, so heavy days can run into the weekly cap without warning.
