OpenSEO turns DataForSEO into a usable SEO desk for the price of the queries, which is a fair deal for small sites and a thin one for anyone who needs Ahrefs-grade link data.

What is OpenSEO?

OpenSEO, from the EveryApp team, bills itself as an open-source alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, competitor insights, backlinks, site audits and AI visibility in a deliberately small web app, and exposes the same data through an MCP server and agent skills for Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor.

It owns no SEO data. Every number comes from DataForSEO, so a self-hosted install needs your own DataForSEO key and you pay them per request. Self-hosting runs on Docker (Coolify, Portainer and Dokploy work) or as one deploy to your own Cloudflare account, which works on the free plan. The hosted version at openseo.so charges a subscription that is mostly prepaid usage, with a flat 28% markup on each DataForSEO call.

The repository was created in February 2026, is MIT-licensed, has about 25,900 GitHub stars and is on v0.1.22 (31 October 2026), with releases arriving every day or two.

Is OpenSEO worth it?

OpenSEO's real product is honest pricing over someone else's data. It is a clean interface and an MCP server on top of DataForSEO, and its pricing page says so plainly: each action costs what DataForSEO charges plus 28%, about $0.05 for a keyword search and $0.08 for a backlink overview with a year of history. The page's default calculator, 100 keyword searches, 20 backlink checks and 50 keywords tracked weekly, comes to $7.52 of usage, inside the $10 Base plan. Its own comparison point is Ahrefs Lite at $129 a month.

The agent side is what sets it apart from older self-hosted rank trackers. The MCP server lets Claude Code, ChatGPT (including the free plan, per the docs), Codex and Cursor query keywords, rankings and Search Console data directly, and the shipped skills turn that into workflows such as a content gap or an audit. Self-hosting is unusually tidy: a prebuilt Docker image or a single Cloudflare deploy, email-and-password accounts where the first visitor becomes admin, and an option to drop sign-in entirely behind Tailscale or Cloudflare Access.

The limits follow from the design. Data quality is DataForSEO's, not a crawler OpenSEO runs, so backlink depth and keyword volumes will not match the indexes Ahrefs and Semrush build themselves. Site-audit pricing is not published on the pricing page. And the first-visitor-becomes-admin default means a fresh public deploy should be claimed before anyone else finds the URL.

Age is the other caveat. The project is eight months old, at v0.1.22, with about 134 open issues and a release cadence of several a week. For a freelancer or a five-page SaaS site, that trade is easy to accept; an agency running client reporting on it is betting on a pre-1.0 tool whose data supplier sits outside its control.

Where it earns its place

  • A solo founder running a 40-page SaaS marketing site

Find keywords worth writing for without paying for Semrush

Run 100 keyword searches and 20 backlink checks a month through the hosted Base plan; the pricing calculator puts that at $7.52 of usage inside the $10 fee. Cancel in quiet months, since there is no annual lock-in.

  • A growth engineer whose team writes content with Claude Code

Let the agent check search demand and current rankings before drafting a page

Connect the OpenSEO MCP server and install the agent skills; the agent pulls volumes, Search Console positions and competitor pages as tool calls. Each lookup bills at DataForSEO cost, or cost plus 28% on the hosted plan.

  • A three-person agency with 15 small local clients

Track weekly rankings for each client at low cost

Self-host on Cloudflare's free plan with a DataForSEO key and add teammates by invite link. Rank checks cost a fraction of a cent each, but expect to report around gaps where DataForSEO's backlink data is thinner than Ahrefs'.

Before you commit

Setup
Hosted: sign up at openseo.so with $0.50 of trial credit. Self-hosted: pull the prebuilt Docker image or run one Cloudflare deploy command, then add a DataForSEO API key; the first visitor creates the admin account.
Integrations
MCP server documented for Claude, ChatGPT web and desktop, Codex and Cursor; installable agent skills; Google Search Console data; DataForSEO for everything else.
Data and privacy
Self-hosted, your projects and saved results stay in your Docker volume or Cloudflare account and queries go to DataForSEO. Hosted, OpenSEO proxies every DataForSEO request. Sign-in can be replaced by Cloudflare Access or a private network. MIT licence.
Cost at scale
Hosted tiers are $10, $30 and $200 a month with $10, $36 and $240 of usage included; beyond that, DataForSEO cost plus 28%. Self-hosting removes the markup, leaving DataForSEO's own per-request pricing and a small server or a free Cloudflare plan.
Limits
About 134 open issues on a v0.1 codebase; no proprietary crawl index, so backlink and volume data are only as good as DataForSEO's; audit pricing not published.
