How we count

Sources. npm’s and PyPI’s (pypistats.org) public download counts (scoped npm packages through npm search, which reaches the 5,250 most relevant MCP packages, so a scoped server under about 100 weekly downloads may be missing), Hugging Face’s model API and GitHub’s API. We count nothing ourselves and see no one’s usage.
What gets in. MCP servers from the official MCP registry that publish an npm or PyPI package named for MCP (a server shipped inside a general tool, such as a CLI, would otherwise rank by everyone who installs that tool), the 1,000 most downloaded Hugging Face models in our categories, the AI repos in our GitHub listings, and everything we have reviewed. A server with both an npm and a PyPI package counts both.
Growth. Each weekly count is saved, and growth compares with the newest count at least six days older. MCP servers need 500 weekly downloads and models 10,000 monthly downloads a week earlier to rank as growing, so a jump from 3 to 30 doesn’t top the list. Repos rank by stars gained, since a ratio would favour tiny projects.
What it misses. Downloads include CI runs and mirrors, so they overstate people. Hosted MCP servers and closed models have no public count. Stars measure interest, and some are bought. A failed lookup is left out rather than counted as zero.
Not a recommendation. Popular is not the same as good. Rows marked Reviewed link to our review; the rest link to the project.
