An ambitious agent office for one desktop, open in its code but with the collaboration features kept behind the packaged app.

What is Orkas?

Orkas is an open-source desktop app for macOS and Windows (and Linux from source) that runs a team of AI agents. A Commander agent takes a goal, does small tasks itself and splits larger ones into to-dos for 16 built-in specialists, such as DeepResearcher, ContentWriter, PptMaker, VideoStudio, ProductDeveloper and five e-commerce agents. It can also hand work to CLI agents you already have installed: Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, OpenClaw and Hermes-Agent.

Work is organised into projects with their own goals, rules, memory and files, plus to-do lists, an Auto-advance mode that picks up the next item, scheduled automations and connectors for Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Slack, Shopify and Stripe. Data is stored on your machine by default.

The repo is MIT-licensed with about 6,000 GitHub stars, created in April 2026, with releases versioned by date (v2026.10.27). It is open core: shared projects, cloud sync and web-app publishing exist only in the packaged app, which comes with 500 free credits and paid plans from $5.99 a month.

Is Orkas worth it?

Orkas is aimed less at developers than at a small business owner who wants one place to hand off research, content, slide decks and store chores to agents. Its distinguishing idea is the project: a container with goals, rules, memory and files that every conversation starts from, a shared to-do list split between people and agents, and an Auto-advance switch that lets the team pick up the next item and return finished work for review. Scheduled automations repeat a task hourly to monthly, and connectors reach Gmail, Notion, Slack, Shopify and Stripe, asking before anything is sent, posted or deleted.

The coordination layer is the interesting part for technical readers. Rather than reimplementing a coding agent, Orkas runs Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode as local sessions and lets the Commander hand one the implementation and another the review, while its own specialists draft the release note or launch video. That makes it closer to a manager for agents you already pay for than a replacement, and it competes with hermes-agent and crewai from the opposite direction: a finished desktop app rather than a framework or a single always-on agent.

The open-source story has limits. The MIT repo is real and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, but shared projects, cloud sync and publishing apps to a public link are only in the packaged build, which wants a sign-in. The built-in Orkas model and voice input route through Orkas's own service and spend credits; only your own provider keys go direct. Sixteen specialists across video, SEO, stock analysis and e-commerce is a very broad promise for a project created in April 2026, and the README publishes no evaluations of how well any of them do their jobs.

Pricing is moderate if you use the credits: Pro is $16.99 a month for 5,000, and the company claims model costs up to 50% below provider list prices. With your own keys the packaged app's paid tiers mainly buy sync, storage and sharing. The project is moving fast, with about 6,000 stars and frequent date-stamped releases, but this is an early product whose breadth has not yet been tested in public.

Where it earns its place

  • A two-person Shopify store owner

Get a weekly sales brief and draft replies to bad reviews without opening five tools

Connect Shopify, set a weekly automation for ECommerceAnalyzer and let ECommerceReviewer group complaint themes; Orkas asks before posting anything. Pro is $16.99 a month for 5,000 credits, or free with your own keys.

  • An indie developer shipping a SaaS release

Fix the bug, review the change and write the launch post in one place

The Commander hands the fix to Claude Code, the review to Codex and the changelog and post to ContentWriter, keeping one plan. Each CLI agent bills through its own subscription.

  • A marketing consultant producing monthly client reports

Turn research into a report, a slide deck and a short video on a schedule

One project per client holds the template and rules; DeepResearcher, PptMaker and VideoStudio share it. Video is credit-hungry: Orkas lists 1,000 credits as only 10 to 20 seconds of generated video.

Before you commit

Setup
Download the packaged app for macOS 12+ or Windows 10+ and sign in for 500 credits, or run from source with Node 22.12+ (the only route on Linux, glibc 2.34+) and your own model keys.
Integrations
Models from Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, MiniMax and Doubao or any local OpenAI-compatible endpoint; CLI agents Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, OpenClaw and Hermes-Agent; connectors including Gmail, Google Calendar, Sheets, Drive, Notion, Slack, Shopify and Stripe.
Data and privacy
Conversations, files and agents stay on disk by default; optional cloud sync in the packaged app stores data on Orkas servers. The built-in model and voice recognition run through Orkas's service; own-key calls go direct. MIT licence; no telemetry policy is stated in the README.
Cost at scale
Own keys: model costs only. With credits: Lite $5.99 for 1,000, Pro $16.99 for 5,000, Max $29.99 for 10,000 a month, unused monthly credits expiring; Orkas lists 1,000 credits as 70 to 350 chats or 83 images.
Limits
Collaboration, sync and publishing missing from the open-source build; scheduled automations only run while the computer and app are on, catching up one missed run within 12 hours; no public quality benchmarks for the specialists.

What’s good

  • Projects with memory, to-dos and Auto-advance keep work moving across days
  • Drives Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode alongside its own agents

  • MIT source build runs on macOS, Windows and Linux

What’s not

  • Shared projects, sync and app publishing are packaged-app only
  • Built-in model and voice input go through Orkas's service
  • No published evaluations of the 16 specialists
  • Young project, created April 2026, with a very broad scope

Best for

Solo founders and small teams who want research, content and store tasks handled by agents from one desktop app, and already use Claude Code or Codex for the code.
