universal-modder turns a coding agent into a capable modding assistant for single-player games, and its shared field notes matter more than the art pipeline.

What is universal-modder?

universal-modder packages what Rehan Sheikh's agents learned modding Terraria, Age of Empires II and GTA V into a plugin for coding agents. Twelve skills cover the loop: game recon, open-web research, reverse engineering with tools such as ILSpy, Ghidra and Frida, asset generation, the asset pipeline into engine-exact sprites, driving the running game, cutting a showcase video, game-inside-a-game mashups, packaging, porting mods and sharing field notes. A Python CLI, um, does the mechanical work, from fingerprinting a game's engine and anti-cheat to rendering 3D models into sprite frames with Blender.

Art, 3D, sound and video come from fal through its MCP server and um fal, with local ComfyUI as a free option and two paid sprite services, Sprixen and Voidless, as extras. A knowledge base of field notes, written by agents after each mod and merged as pull requests, held 232 notes across 137 games on 28 October 2026. It installs as a plugin for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, VS Code Copilot, Cursor and OpenCode, or through npx skills.

Is universal-modder worth it?

universal-modder is a working toolkit rather than a demo, and it got there fast. The repo was created on 30 September 2026 and had about 9,100 stars, 100 contributors, 320 commits and 386 pull requests four weeks later, which reads as a real community rather than bought attention. There is no tagged release yet; you install from the main branch, which changes daily.

The knowledge base is the distinctive part. Each mod ends with the agent writing a field note that records the exact versions that worked, the route and the gotchas, and opening a pull request. On 28 October the folder held 232 notes across 137 games, from tModLoader weapons to a Minecraft and GTA V passthrough mod that links the two games over a local WebSocket. A general agent asked to mod an Unreal or Bethesda game starts from scratch; this one starts with someone else's mistakes written down. The quality of those notes is uneven by design, since agents write them and the repo asks only for an honest status.

The guardrails are sensible but young. The skills refuse to inject into online games with anti-cheat or bypass DRM, back up saves before changes and ask before driving your mouse or installing loaders. Two security reports filed in the week before this review show the attack surface: issue #419 describes a critical flaw in the GTA V example's local link that a web page in your browser could reach to run commands in your Minecraft world, and issue #444 says um backup restore can write outside its target when fed a snapshot from someone else. Neither had a public fix when we checked.

Cost depends on your agent. The README notes that the three-agent mode for long mods uses several times the tokens of one agent, and fal bills every sprite, model and sound. Compared with a general skills pack such as Anthropic's, this does one job in far more depth, and the reverse-engineering and game-automation skills are useful even if you never generate an asset.

Where it earns its place

  • A hobbyist with Terraria and a Claude Max subscription

Add custom weapons and an enemy to the game without learning tModLoader from zero

Install the Claude Code plugin, set a fal key with um fal key set and prompt for the mod; the agent searches existing notes, builds one working slice, makes sprites with fal and tests in the running game. Costs agent usage plus fal generations; um fal price shows each one before it runs.

  • A Unity indie developer on a two-person team

Prototype placeholder sprites and 3D-to-sprite renders for an isometric game

Use um fal for concept art and image-to-3D, then um render3d to render GLB models at the game's camera angle with Blender, or um comfy for free local images. Saves an artist's first pass, not the final art.

  • A modding community lead for an older strategy game

Keep hard-won reverse-engineering knowledge from disappearing with dead forums

Contributors' agents write field notes with um kb new, check them with um kb check and open pull requests; the notes are searchable with um kb search outside the repo. Free; review notes before trusting them, since agents write them.

Before you commit

Setup
`/plugin marketplace add rehan-remade/universal-modder` then `/plugin install universal-modder@universal-modder` in Claude Code, with equivalent commands for Codex, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Needs Git, Python 3.10+, ffmpeg, uv recommended and Blender for 3D-to-sprite work; Windows games run natively or from WSL.
Integrations
fal MCP server and REST API, local ComfyUI, Sprixen and Voidless sprite APIs, Ghidra and IDA over MCP, ILSpy, Cpp2IL, Frida, RenderDoc, BepInEx, tModLoader, Fabric and other loaders.
Data and privacy
Runs locally against your game installs and saves; generation prompts and images go to fal or whichever service you choose. The fal key is stored in the Linux keyring or an owner-only file. um publish check blocks shipping game files, decompiled code and leaked keys. Open security reports #419 and #444 cover the GTA V example's local link and backup restore.
Cost at scale
Free software; costs are your agent plan or API usage and fal's per-generation charges. The three-agent orchestrator mode uses several times the tokens of a single agent, so the README reserves it for mods that take days.
Limits
No releases; refuses online games with anti-cheat; multi-agent setup is untested on some hosts; knowledge-base notes are agent-written and vary in quality.

What's good

  • 232 agent-written field notes on 137 games to start from
  • Recon, decompile, build, in-game test and video in one loop
  • Refuses anti-cheat bypass and multiplayer cheating
  • Works across six agent hosts

What's not

  • Two open security reports, one rated critical
  • No tagged releases; main branch moves daily
  • fal key needed for most asset work
  • Multi-agent mode multiplies token use

Best for

PC players and hobby developers who want an agent to build mods for single-player games they own.
