What is Pipedream MCP and Connect?

Pipedream, owned by Workday since early 2026, is winding down its workflow product to concentrate on Connect. Connect lets an app or agent act in 3,000+ third-party APIs on behalf of its users, with Pipedream handling OAuth, key storage and token refresh. It comes as a REST API with TypeScript, Python and Java SDKs, an authenticated API proxy, and a hosted MCP server that turns Pipedream's registry of 10,000+ prebuilt actions into tools. End users can add the same server, https://mcp.pipedream.net/v2, to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code and use it free for their own accounts.

Workday signed an agreement to buy Pipedream on 19 November 2025, and reported the deal closed in its fiscal 2026 results on 24 February 2026; financial terms were not disclosed. Pipedream has since put its original product, Workflows, and its String agent builder into maintenance mode with six months' notice: both stop running on 31 March 2027 and their data, including connected-account credentials, is deleted by 30 April 2027. Connect, the API, MCP servers and proxy are unaffected and are where the company says its focus now lies.

The component code lives in PipedreamHQ/pipedream (about 11,800 stars), which GitHub shows as NOASSERTION: it is under the Pipedream Source Available License 1.0, which bars commercial use including any competing hosted service. The MCP server itself is closed source.

Is Pipedream MCP and Connect worth it?

Pipedream's MCP server is the thin end of Connect, and Connect is now the whole company. The notice that Workflows will close on 31 March 2027 matters even to MCP users: it shows the new owner will cut a seven-year-old product to concentrate on connecting AI to outside systems, which is good news for Connect's investment and a warning about how quickly priorities can change under Workday.

On the technical side Connect is mature. Each request is tied to an external_user_id from your system; if the user has not connected the app a tool needs, the MCP server returns a Connect Link URL in the tool result so the agent can ask them to sign in. The server speaks both SSE and Streamable HTTP without configuration, and the docs cover the OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Vercel AI SDK integrations. Pipedream says it does not store or log request payloads or response bodies for Connect calls, which is a stricter default than Composio's year of logs.

Pricing is per user as well as per call. Startup is $99 a month on annual billing, or $150 monthly, for 100 end users and 10,000 credits; each extra user is $2 and each extra credit $0.012, with the rate falling at volume. One credit buys 30 seconds of compute for an action run, MCP tool call, proxy request or trigger emit, so most calls cost one credit. The Free plan works only in development mode, so there is no free production tier at all. SSO, SCIM, HIPAA and static egress IPs need the custom Business plan.

The practical limits are mundane. Admin endpoints are capped at 5,000 requests per five minutes per project, there are per-IP limits on top, and long server names can push tool names past client limits, since the MCP spec recommends 128 characters. Hosting is AWS us-east-1 only. For a product that bills per connected user, Connect is better suited to a SaaS with a few hundred paying customers than a free consumer app with tens of thousands.

Where it earns its place

  • A 12-person B2B SaaS team adding an in-app agent

Let customers' agents update their HubSpot and Slack without us holding their tokens

Create a Connect token per customer, let them sign in through Connect Link, then point the agent at the MCP server with their external_user_id. 300 active customers and 30,000 calls a month on Startup annual is about $99 + $400 for 200 extra users + $240 for 20,000 extra credits.

  • An operations manager using Claude Desktop

Pull last week's Stripe revenue and post a summary to Slack

Add https://mcp.pipedream.net/v2 as a custom connector, sign up for a free Pipedream MCP account and enable the two apps. Personal use is free; the account is separate from any pipedream.com login.

  • A team running production automations on Pipedream Workflows

Decide what to do before Workflows stops on 31 March 2027

Export each project's workflow definitions as JSON with the export tool, rebuild them elsewhere, and keep only agent-facing integrations on Connect. Credentials tied to Workflows are deleted by 30 April 2027; Connect credentials are not.

Before you commit

Setup
End users add the server URL to their client and sign in. Developers create a Pipedream project and OAuth client, set PIPEDREAM_CLIENT_ID, PIPEDREAM_CLIENT_SECRET and PIPEDREAM_PROJECT_ID, and work in development mode until they pay.
Integrations
3,000+ APIs and 10,000+ tools generated from Pipedream's action registry, plus triggers, an API proxy for custom requests, and SDKs for TypeScript, Python and Java; documented with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and the Vercel AI SDK.
Data and privacy
Connect does not store or log request payloads or response bodies; credentials are encrypted at rest with AWS KMS; SOC 2 Type 2 report on request, GDPR DPA standard, BAAs on Business; hosted in AWS us-east-1.
Cost at scale
On Startup annual, 1,000 end users and 100,000 one-credit calls a month cost about $99 + $1,800 for users + $1,080 for credits, roughly $3,000, before volume discounts; Business is quoted on an annual contract.
Limits
5,000 project-management requests per five minutes per project, 3,500 token requests per five minutes per OAuth client, plus per-IP limits; tool names can exceed client length limits if the server name is long.

What's good

  • 3,000+ apps and 10,000+ prebuilt tools from one MCP server
  • Does not store Connect request or response bodies
  • Returns a sign-in link mid-conversation when an account is missing
  • SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR on every plan

What's not

  • Owner has just announced the shutdown of Workflows and String
  • No free production tier; $2 per end user past 100
  • HIPAA, SSO and SCIM only on custom Business contracts
  • Hosted in AWS us-east-1 only; MCP server is closed source

Best for

B2B SaaS teams adding agent actions across their customers' apps who value not storing payloads over the lowest per-call price.
