What it is
AI Mode is the conversational part of Google Search. It breaks a question into many searches, writes an answer with links to sources, and lets you ask follow-ups. It accepts text, voice, images, files and, since the search-box redesign announced at Google I/O in May 2026, videos and Chrome tabs.
At I/O on 19 May 2026 Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model worldwide and began merging AI Overviews and AI Mode into one experience. Personal Intelligence, which lets AI Mode draw on your Gmail and Google Photos if you connect them, expanded free to nearly 200 countries and territories in 98 languages. Information agents that watch the web for a topic rolled out first to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Two later changes matter to publishers. In June 2026 Google began letting sites opt out of AI Overviews and AI Mode through Search Console, starting in the UK under a competition-regulator order. On 15 October 2026 it put inline links higher in answers and widened news carousels.
Our review
AI Mode's advantage is distribution, and Google's live data turns that into usefulness. It is free, sits in the search page people already use, and draws on Google's listings for local businesses, shopping, flights and hotels. Restaurant booking expanded beyond the US in April 2026, according to 9to5Google, and hotel booking and flight price alerts followed in August. One billion monthly users by May 2026 is a scale no standalone AI search engine is near.
The paid tiers add less to search than Google's marketing implies. Google AI Pro and the two Ultra plans, now $100 and $200 a month in the US after the May 2026 price change, get newer Flash models in a picker, higher limits and new agents first. Information agents, which watch a topic and send updates with links, reached subscribers before anyone else. For everyday questions the free version, on Gemini 3.5 Flash, is enough.
Sourcing is still the weak spot. Links in AI Mode have historically been less prominent than Perplexity's numbered citations, and the 15 October 2026 update that moves inline links higher is Google's third round of link changes this year after February and May. Answers can be wrong in a confident tone, so treat them as a summary to check. Publishers now have a lever they lacked: a Search Console control, introduced under the UK Competition and Markets Authority's order, removes a site from AI Overviews and AI Mode without, Google says, affecting its ordinary rankings. Opting out also gives up any traffic those answers send.
For developers there is no AI Mode API. The nearest equivalent is Grounding with Google Search in the Gemini API, which gives Gemini 3 and newer models 5,000 free search requests a month and then charges $14 per 1,000. One user prompt can trigger several billed searches, which makes a grounded chatbot's bill depend on the model's appetite for queries rather than on the user count.

Decide whether to keep content in AI Overviews and AI Mode
The Search Console control introduced in June 2026 removes the site from both, and from AI Overviews in Discover, without affecting normal rankings, according to Google. The trade is visibility in AI answers that now include news carousels and higher inline links after the October 2026 update.

AI Mode has no API, so the route is Gemini API grounding: 5,000 free search requests a month across Gemini 3 and newer models, then $14 per 1,000. Each search the model triggers is billed, so cap tool calls per prompt.

Find a venue with availability and book it
Free AI Mode compares restaurants using Google's listings and can check availability and book within the answer, now outside the US as well. Confirm the booking with the restaurant, because the answer is a summary of listings, not a guarantee.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Nothing to install: open the AI Mode tab in Google Search or the Google app. Personal Intelligence is opt-in and connects Gmail and Google Photos, with Calendar promised.
- Integrations
- Built into Google Search, the Google app, Chrome's address bar and Android's search bar. No public AI Mode API; developers use Grounding with Google Search in the Gemini API instead.
- Cost at scale
- Free for searchers. A grounded app making one million searches a month pays about $13,930 at $14 per 1,000 after the 5,000 free requests, before model tokens.
- Limits
- Answers can be wrong and need checking against the linked pages. Information agents and newer models reach paid subscribers first; the publisher opt-out works per site, not per query, and does not cover the Gemini app.
What's good

- Uses Google's live data for local businesses, shopping and travel
- Restaurant and hotel booking inside the answer

- Publishers can opt out via Search Console without a ranking penalty, Google says
What's not
- Citations less prominent than Perplexity's numbered sources
- Newest agents and models go to paid subscribers first
- No API; developers must build on Gemini grounding at $14 per 1,000 searches
- Confident answers can still be wrong
- Opting a site out also forfeits any traffic from AI answers
Best for
Anyone who wants conversational answers to everyday questions without paying for a separate AI search tool.
