What it is
QuillBot is a set of writing tools best known for its paraphraser, which rewrites a sentence or paragraph in different words. It also has a grammar checker, summariser, translator, citation generator, AI detector, plagiarism checker, AI chat and a humaniser that rewrites AI-generated text to read more naturally. It is owned by Learneo, the company behind Course Hero, and says it has more than 35 million users.
The free plan limits the paraphraser and humaniser to 100 words at a time and the paraphraser to two modes, Standard and Fluency, and the summariser to 1,200 words. Premium, at $8.33 a month billed annually ($99.95 a year) or $19.95 month to month, removes the paraphrase limit, adds nine built-in modes plus unlimited custom modes, raises the summariser to 6,000 words and includes 25,000 words a month of plagiarism checks. A Team plan adds admin controls and volume discounts from five members.
Our review
QuillBot sells speed rather than intelligence. The paraphraser's nine preset modes are quicker than writing a prompt, and Premium at $8.33 a month on annual billing, about $100 a year, is cheaper than any general chatbot subscription. For a student moving between essays, summaries and citations, the pieces fit together; for anyone already paying for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, most of it is duplicated.
The free tier is tighter than it used to be. Paraphrasing and humanising stop at 100 words a pass, down from the 125 that older reviews quote, which means a paragraph at a time, and only Standard and Fluency modes. Premium's plagiarism check is capped at 25,000 words a month, roughly six 4,000-word essays.
Data handling is the detail most users never see. QuillBot's trust centre says inputs and usage data are used to train and improve its services and that storing text inputs is on by default for everyone. Extension users on version 4.37.0 or later can opt out of storage and, if they have an account, out of training; QuillBot does not train on Team plan inputs at all. The trust centre lists GDPR, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, CCPA, PCI DSS and a CASA Tier 2 assessment, but no SOC 2 or ISO 27001, both of which Grammarly lists.
The academic risks are the user's, not the software's. Paraphrasing someone else's work without citation is still plagiarism, many universities treat humanising AI text to dodge detectors as misconduct, and AI detectors, QuillBot's included, produce false positives. Against Grammarly the split is clear: Grammarly checks errors in every app with 100 free AI prompts a month, while QuillBot rewrites on demand, and for a team buyer Grammarly's certification list is the stronger document to hand to IT.
Where it earns its place
An international postgraduate student writing in English
Make draft paragraphs read more fluently and summarise long papers
Premium at about $100 a year gives unlimited paraphrasing, 6,000-word summaries and 25,000 words a month of plagiarism checks. Turn off text storage and training in the extension settings, and cite anything paraphrased from a source.
A 12-person support team writing customer replies in a second language
Polish replies quickly without sending text into model training
The Team plan excludes inputs from training, adds a user dashboard, usage metrics and central billing, and gets a discount from five members. Prices are by quote, and the trust centre names no SOC 2 report, so security review may stall.
A university academic-integrity officer
Decide whether QuillBot's AI detector can support misconduct cases
Treat its score as a prompt for a conversation, not evidence: detectors give false positives, and the same product sells a humaniser built to evade them. QuillBot's own page offers full detector access only on Premium.
