Our rating

4.2/5

Zendesk AI is the low-friction choice for teams already on Zendesk, but a resolution costs $1.50 to $2.00 against Intercom Fin's $0.99, and the add-ons that make it useful cost extra.

What it is

Zendesk AI is the set of AI features in the Zendesk helpdesk. AI agents answer customers over messaging, email and voice, follow procedures written in plain language, connect to outside systems to take actions, and translate into more than 80 languages. Copilot helps human agents with ticket triage, suggested replies, step-by-step guidance and tone rewriting. A QA add-on reviews conversations, human or AI.

AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan, with a small number of automated resolutions per agent each month (5 on most plans, 10 on Suite Professional). Extra resolutions cost $1.50 each on a commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, and since May 2026 Zendesk bills only resolutions that a second AI model has verified. The Copilot add-on costs $50 per agent a month on yearly billing and is sold on Suite Professional and above.

Zendesk agreed to buy Forethought, whose AI agents also work with other helpdesks, in March 2026, and announced its Resolution Platform, Agent Builder and voice AI agents at its Relate conference on 19 May 2026. Plans start at $19 per agent a month (Support Team) and $55 (Suite Team) on yearly billing.

Our review

Zendesk's strength is that the AI sits inside a helpdesk that more than 100,000 brands already use, so AI agents, routing, triage and quality checks share the same tickets, macros and reporting without a migration. The plain-language procedure builder and the reasoning view, which shows how the agent reached an answer, have narrowed the gap with AI-first vendors such as Decagon and Sierra.

The billing is the part to model before signing. Each agent seat includes 5 automated resolutions a month, or 10 on Suite Professional, so a 40-seat team gets 200 to 400 before paying $1.50 each on a commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome. Since May 2026, Zendesk says it bills only resolutions confirmed by a separate AI evaluation model, and escalations to humans are free, which answers the earlier complaint that a customer who simply went quiet counted as resolved. The definition still rests on Zendesk's own model judging success.

Add-ons stack quickly. Copilot is $50 per agent a month and sold only on Suite Professional and above; without it, Suite Professional gets a shared pool of 5 Copilot uses per agent capped at 500 per account. QA, voice and the Workforce Engagement Bundle ($50 per agent) are separate again. On compliance, data residency in the US, EEA, UK or APAC and a HIPAA business associate agreement are marked on Suite Professional, while advanced encryption, custom retention and data masking sit outside all three listed plans.

The Forethought deal, announced in March 2026, gives Zendesk a second AI agent that also runs on other helpdesks, and the Relate announcements in May added a no-code Agent Builder, an MCP client in early access and voice agents built on Amazon Connect. Much of that roadmap was still labelled early access when announced, so buyers should ask which parts are generally available on their plan before counting on them.

Where it earns its place

  • A 40-agent support team on Zendesk Suite Professional

Automate order-status and returns questions over messaging and email

Seats cost $4,600 a month on yearly billing and include 400 resolutions. At 2,000 automated resolutions a month, the extra 1,600 cost $2,400 on a commitment, and adding Copilot for all 40 agents brings the total to about $9,000 a month.

  • A support operations engineer at a SaaS company

Let the AI agent issue refunds and look up accounts in internal systems

Procedures are written in plain language and actions call outside systems through Action Builder, with credits at $200 per 100,000 actions per term. The MCP client announced in May 2026 was in early access, so production integrations still go through Action Builder.

  • The head of support at a US telehealth provider

Use AI on patient tickets without breaking HIPAA obligations

Suite Professional is marked HIPAA enabled with a business associate agreement, and data can be stored in the US region. Data masking and custom retention are not part of the listed plans, so they need a quote.
