Midjourney vs Ideogram

Midjourney leads on default aesthetics and style control; Ideogram leads on spelling and typography inside images. Ideogram is also the more open product, with a free tier, a pay-per-image API and downloadable 4.0 weights, where Midjourney has no free trial and no general public API.

The division is clean. Midjourney's strength is taste: users on Reddit and in design communities return to it because its default outputs look finished, and style references, moodboards and a personal style profile give more control over a consistent look than most rivals. Ideogram's strength is words. It made its name spelling text correctly inside images, and reviews and user threads consistently rank it at or near the top for typography.

Both closed gaps in 2026. Midjourney's V8.2, the default since July 24, renders native 2K images, generates much faster and handles text better than V7. Ideogram 4.0, released on June 3, also outputs native 2K and adds structured JSON prompts that set layout, colour and text placement. Even so, Midjourney remains less exact for posters, logos and layouts where the words and positions must be precise, and Ideogram still produces less striking general art and photography.

The business terms favour Ideogram. It has a free tier, a pay-per-image API from $0.03, and with 4.0 its first downloadable weights, so companies can fine-tune on brand assets and run the model themselves; check the licence first, because coverage of the release describes the terms differently. Midjourney has no public API for most customers, so it does not fit automated pipelines. Its pricing is based on GPU time: Basic at $10 has no Relax mode, so most regular users end up on Standard at $30, and keeping images out of the public gallery needs Pro at $60.

Each carries a caution. Midjourney is a defendant in a combined copyright suit from Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. Discovery, filed in 2025 and still running, which matters if you work for a brand with a cautious legal team. Ideogram's plan line-up has changed often, its dollar figures should be treated as approximate, and it offers no vector export; Recraft is better for SVG files. Neither is the best choice for following long, detailed instructions, where ChatGPT's image tool leads.
