Ideogram is the image generator to trust when the words must be spelled right, but its downloadable weights are a research licence, not a free pass to self-host for clients.

What it is

Ideogram is a Toronto image generator started in 2022 by former Google Brain researchers. It made its name on one thing other tools got wrong: spelling words correctly inside images. That makes it a common pick for posters, social graphics, thumbnails, logos and mock-ups.

Ideogram 4.0, released on 3 June 2026, is a 9.3-billion-parameter model with native 2K output, multilingual text and structured JSON prompts that set layout, bounding boxes and colour palettes. It is the company's first model with downloadable weights, but those weights are licensed for non-commercial use only; the inference code on GitHub is Apache 2.0, which is why some coverage describes the release as open source. Ideogram 4.5 followed on 30 September 2026 as an editing model built to avoid drift across repeated edits, live in the app and API with weights promised later.

The web app has a free tier and monthly credit plans, and also offers partner models such as GPT Image and Nano Banana. A separate prepaid API covers Ideogram's own and partner models.

Our review

Ideogram is the tool designers reach for when an image has to carry text: a poster headline, a product label, a YouTube thumbnail. Reviews and user threads consistently rank it at or near the top for typography. Ideogram 4.0's JSON prompts, which pin text to bounding boxes and fix a colour palette, make layout more predictable than prose prompting. Ideogram's model card reports strong placings on the third-party Design Arena and LMArena leaderboards, though those are its own selections.

The open-weight release is narrower than the headlines. The gated Hugging Face weights, in fp8 and nf4 builds, come under the Ideogram 4 Non-Commercial licence. That allows research, hobby use and testing by companies in non-production environments, and it rules out customer-facing deployment, generating images to promote revenue-earning products and fine-tuning for commercial use. A brand team that wants a self-hosted model on its own assets needs a separate agreement. The cheaper route is custom models on Pro, Team or the API, trained on 15 to 100 images in the self-serve tool.

The credit plans are clear once you read the help centre rather than the marketing page. Plus at $15 a month on yearly billing gives 2,400 credits, Pro at $42 gives 7,500 plus batch generation, and unused credits do not roll over. Paid plans keep an unlimited slow queue, but edits, upscales, reference images and custom models always spend credits. Free accounts get 30 credits a week only if they sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft, and everything they make is public.

The data terms change with the product you use. The API agreement says Ideogram will not train on API inputs or outputs unless they are flagged for breaking its usage policy. Custom-model training data on Pro and Team, by contrast, may be used to improve Ideogram's foundation models; only Enterprise rules that out. A studio uploading a client's unreleased packaging to the self-serve trainer is, on those terms, handing it to Ideogram's next model.

Where it earns its place

  • A two-person design studio making event posters and social graphics

Produce on-brand layouts with exact headline text

Pro at $42 a month on yearly billing gives 7,500 credits, private images and batch generation; JSON prompts fix where text sits. Credits lapse monthly, so a quiet month is money lost.

  • An ML engineer at an e-commerce company

Evaluate self-hosting Ideogram 4.0 for product imagery

The fp8 and nf4 weights download from Hugging Face after accepting a gate, and the licence permits internal testing. Putting the model behind a live storefront or fine-tuning it for production needs a commercial agreement with Ideogram; the hosted API is the licensed path.

  • A marketing ops lead at a 12-person in-house creative team

Give every designer access with central billing

Team at $20 per user per month on yearly billing gives each member 3,600 credits: 12 seats cost $2,880 a year. Uploading client assets to train a custom model on Team allows Ideogram to use them for its own models; Enterprise is the plan that rules this out.

  • A developer adding poster generation to a print-on-demand app

Generate text-heavy designs from user input via API

The prepaid v2 API serves Ideogram 4.0 and 4.5 plus partner models, with 10 requests in flight by default. Image URLs expire, so files must be copied to your own storage, and 4.5 endpoints can return a price quote before running.

Before you commit

Setup
Sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft for free weekly credits; API keys need a prepaid balance. Self-hosting needs a Hugging Face account that accepts the licence gate and a CUDA GPU for the nf4 build.
Integrations
REST API (v1 and v2) with async jobs and webhooks; partner models including GPT Image and Nano Banana in the app; Diffusers support for the nf4 weights.
Data and privacy
Free generations are public. The API agreement bars training on API inputs and outputs except content flagged for abuse; custom-model data on Pro and Team may train base models, Enterprise excluded.
Cost at scale
A 12-seat Team plan costs $2,880 a year on yearly billing for 43,200 credits a month in total. Per-image API rates are on a pricing page that would not load for this review.
Limits
API default is 10 in-flight requests, more by request; generated image links expire. Edits, upscales and reference-image generations always use credits, even on unlimited slow queues.

What's good

  • Best-in-class text and typography in images
  • JSON prompts with bounding boxes and colour palettes for layout control
  • API agreement rules out training on API inputs and outputs
  • Ideogram 4.5 targets drift-free multi-step editing
  • Paid plans keep an unlimited slow queue for standard generations

What's not

  • Ideogram 4.0 weights are licensed for non-commercial use only
  • Free-tier images are public, and email sign-ups get no free credits
  • Pro and Team custom-model data may train Ideogram's base models
  • Monthly credits do not roll over
  • No vector export; Recraft is better for SVG

Best for

Marketers and designers making posters, thumbnails, ads and logos where text must be exact.
