4.6/5

Midjourney still makes the best-looking images by default, but it is a hand-operated studio: no API, public by default, and $60 a month before your work stays private.

What it is

Midjourney is an independent lab's image generator, used through its website or Discord. You type a prompt, get four images, then upscale, vary, edit or animate them. Style references, moodboards and a personal style profile let you steer its look.

V8 arrived as an alpha on March 17, 2026. V8.1, released on April 14, renders native 2K images without upscaling and, according to Midjourney's version notes, runs standard jobs four to five times faster than earlier versions. V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026, with a new Edit Model that replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture. The anime model Niji 7 launched on January 9, 2026. Video turns an image into a short clip.

There is still no official API, and the terms of service ban automated access. Midjourney is a defendant in a combined copyright suit from Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. Discovery, filed in June 2025 and still in pre-trial stages in October 2026.

Our review

Midjourney's lead is taste, and V8 kept it. Users in design communities return to it because default outputs look finished, and style references, moodboards and personalisation give more control over a consistent look than most rivals. V8.1 added native 2K output and, per the version notes, standard jobs four to five times faster than before; V8.2, the default since July 24, 2026, tuned aesthetics and personalisation further.

The upgrade took tools away as well. V8.1 and V8.2 drop Omni Reference, multi-prompting, the quality parameter, and Draft and Turbo modes, and the new Edit Model replaces Character Reference and Retexture. HD jobs cost 1.3 GPU minutes against 0.8 for SD, and Pan, Zoom Out and Vary Region quietly downscale HD images to SD.

For engineers the answer is short: there is no official API, and the terms effective May 27, 2026 forbid using automated tools to generate images. Services sold as a "Midjourney API" are unofficial wrappers that put the account at risk. If image generation has to sit inside a pipeline, Ideogram, Recraft, or OpenAI's and Google's image APIs are the realistic choices.

Buyers should read the licence before the price list. Content is public and remixable by default, and Midjourney takes a perpetual, irrevocable licence to your prompts and outputs. Stealth mode, which promises only "best efforts" to keep work out of the gallery, needs Pro ($60) or Mega ($120), and a company with more than $1 million in annual revenue must be on one of those plans to own its images at all. Basic at $10 gives 3.3 fast hours and no Relax mode, so most regular users land on Standard at $30.

Video is a sideline. Unlimited Relax video starts at Pro, and dedicated tools such as Kling and Runway give more control over length and camera. The studio lawsuit is in discovery, with a November 23, 2026 deadline for motions on the court docket, which matters far more to a cautious brand legal team than to a freelance illustrator.

Where it earns its place

  • An art director at a 15-person agency pitching campaigns

Produce mood frames and key visuals for pitches in a consistent style per client

Builds a moodboard and style code per client, explores in Relax mode and spends fast hours on finals. As a company over $1M revenue the agency must use Pro, $60 a seat or $48 billed yearly, which also brings Stealth so pitches stay out of the public gallery.

  • A solo indie game developer

Concept environments and props in one art style before modelling them

Standard at $30 gives unlimited Relax images and 15 fast hours; HD jobs at 1.3 GPU minutes give 2K references. Panning or zooming out an HD image drops it to SD, so finals are regenerated rather than extended.

  • A brand marketing lead at a national retailer

Generate seasonal campaign imagery that legal will sign off

Mega at $120 adds 60 fast hours for heavy months and Stealth for unreleased work. The sticking points are the perpetual licence Midjourney takes on inputs and outputs and the unresolved studio lawsuit, both of which legal will ask about.
