What it is
codex-plugin-cc is OpenAI's plugin for Claude Code. It adds /codex:review for a read-only review of your changes, /codex:adversarial-review for a review you can steer toward design risks, /codex:rescue to hand a task to Codex, and /codex:transfer to move a Claude Code session into a Codex thread, plus status, result and cancel commands for background jobs.
It does not ship its own runtime. It drives your local Codex CLI and app server, so it uses your existing Codex login, config.toml and limits. You need a ChatGPT plan (Free counts) or an OpenAI API key, and Node.js 18.18 or newer. OpenAI published it on 30 March 2026; the last commit and release, v1.0.6, landed on 8 July 2026.
Our review
This plugin does one useful thing well: it lets Claude Code call your local Codex CLI for a read-only review of uncommitted changes or a branch, or hand a task over entirely, without leaving the session. The case for it is cross-model review. A model from a different lab tends to miss different things, and the work draws on your ChatGPT allowance rather than your Anthropic one. It has about 34,500 GitHub stars.
Maintenance is the concern. The last commit and release, v1.0.6, landed on 8 July 2026, and 537 issues and pull requests are open. Many of the open pull requests target the same fault: the app-server broker processes the plugin starts do not shut themselves down, and one report counted 272 orphaned processes holding about 2.2 GB of RAM. The README's examples still name gpt-5.4-mini while OpenAI's Codex pricing page now lists the GPT-6 family, and a pull request adding newer models sits unmerged.
Costs are indirect but real. Every review counts against Codex limits: OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local messages per five hours on GPT-6.1 Sol for a $20 Plus plan, and Pro plans from $100 a month have no five-hour cap. The optional review gate adds a Stop hook that runs a Codex review on each Claude reply and blocks Claude until the issues are fixed; the README warns it can create a long-running loop that drains usage limits quickly.
The nearest alternatives do a different job. Skills packs such as superpowers give Claude a review discipline but keep it inside one model, and claude-code-router swaps the model under Claude rather than adding a second opinion. For a team already paying OpenAI, this plugin is the cheapest route to that second opinion, as long as someone checks for stray Codex processes after long sessions.

Get an independent review before pushing a branch
Run /codex:review --base main --background, carry on in Claude, then read /codex:result. It costs nothing beyond the $20 Plus plan until the five-hour message allowance runs out; multi-file reviews take minutes, so the background flag matters.

/codex:adversarial-review with focus text, for example 'look for race conditions in the retry path', returns a design-level critique. Business seats at $20 per user per month billed annually cover it, and OpenAI says Business data is not used for training by default.

The plugin is free, so the cost is the Codex plan: Plus at $20 a month, or Business at $25 per user billed monthly. The risk to manage is the review gate, which can run Codex on every Claude reply; leave it off by default.
Before you commit
- Setup
- In Claude Code run /plugin marketplace add openai/codex-plugin-cc, /plugin install codex@openai-codex, /reload-plugins, then /codex:setup, which can install the Codex CLI through npm. Needs Node.js 18.18 or later and a Codex login; the first review takes a few minutes.
- Integrations
- Wraps the local Codex CLI and app server; adds eight slash commands and a codex:codex-rescue subagent. /codex:transfer turns a Claude Code session into a Codex thread you can resume in the Codex app or TUI.
- Data and privacy
- No separate service: code goes from your machine to OpenAI under your Codex account's terms. OpenAI says Business data is not used for training by default, and Enterprise adds retention and residency controls. Reviews are read-only; /codex:rescue can edit files.
- Cost at scale
- The plugin is free; usage comes out of Codex limits. Plus is $20 a month, Pro $100, $200 or $500, Business $20 per user per month billed annually ($25 monthly). API-key use is billed at API rates and has no cloud features.
- Limits
- 537 open issues and pull requests with no merges since July 2026; broker processes can be left running after sessions, especially on Windows; /codex:transfer needs a Codex version with session import; the review gate can loop.
