What is Ableton MCP?
Ableton MCP, by Siddharth Ahuja (who also maintains MCP for Blender), connects an MCP client to Ableton Live through a MIDI Remote Script. The script runs inside Live and listens on a local TCP socket (port 9877); the Python MCP server, run with uvx ableton-mcp, sends it JSON commands. It needs Ableton Live 10 or newer and is not made by Ableton.
The server registers 37 tools: reading the session, tracks, clip notes and device parameters; creating MIDI and audio tracks and clips; adding and clearing notes; loading instruments, effects and drum kits from Live's browser; setting tempo and device parameters; firing clips and controlling playback; and building songs in Arrangement View with locators. The repository is MIT-licensed with about 3,280 stars, and version 1.4.5 reached PyPI on 22 September 2026.

uvx ableton-mcpIs Ableton MCP worth it?
Ableton MCP is the reference point for AI control of a DAW, with about 3,280 GitHub stars and around 2,400 PyPI downloads in the last week. Its strength is that it works on the real session: a model can see which tracks and devices exist, create a MIDI track, load a synth bass from Live's browser, write a four-bar clip and set the tempo, all in one conversation. That turns jobs such as building a template, renaming forty clips or laying out an arrangement skeleton into a sentence.
The musical output is another matter. The model writes notes as lists of pitches and times, so what you get is as good as its music theory and no better; it does not hear the result. The tool set is limited to Live's own devices and browser items, and the README warns that complex arrangements need breaking into smaller steps. Open issues include add_notes_to_clip reporting success for notes Live drops, success messages that read Live's state before a change applies, and one titled simply 'Massive token usage'.
Telemetry needs a careful read. Anonymous usage data (install ID, session ID, which tools ran, success and timing) is on by default. A second tier, dataset recording, captures prompts, MIDI notes, track and clip names and device settings, which the terms say may be published in an open dataset to train music models. It is opt-in, asked on your first tool call, and a September commit tightened it after issue #124 reported recording starting before the consent prompt was answered. Every tool also carries a user_prompt field for that purpose. Setting ABLETON_MCP_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true turns both off.
The security model is the same as its Blender sibling: the Remote Script accepts commands from anything that can reach its socket. The September release bound it to the loopback address, so the exposure is local processes rather than the network. With 37 tools it is lighter on context than LivePilot's 474, and it trades depth for a smaller, more predictable surface.
Where it earns its place
A producer who starts every track from the same eight-track template
Rebuild a session template with named tracks, instruments and effects in seconds
Ask Claude to create the MIDI and audio tracks, name them, load the drum rack and synths from Live's browser and set the tempo. Free apart from the model subscription, and it saves the clicking, not the creative work.
A music-theory teacher preparing examples for a class
Generate chord progressions and melodies as editable MIDI clips
Describe the progression; the model writes the notes with add_notes_to_clip and fires the clip. Check the result by ear, since the tool can report notes as added that Live silently dropped.
A game-audio contractor sketching cues for a pitch
Lay out an arrangement skeleton with intro, build, drop and outro
Ask for the structure in Arrangement View; duplicate_to_arrangement and create_locator mark the sections. Keep dataset recording off on client work so cue material is not collected.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Install uv, add uvx ableton-mcp to Claude Desktop, Cursor or Claude Code (claude mcp add AbletonMCP uvx ableton-mcp), run uvx --from ableton-mcp ableton-mcp-install-script, then pick AbletonMCP as a Control Surface in Live's Link, Tempo & MIDI settings. Needs Python 3.10+ for the current package.
- Integrations
- 37 tools, including get_session_info, get_track_info, get_clip_notes, create_midi_track, create_clip, add_notes_to_clip, load_instrument_or_effect, load_drum_kit, set_device_parameter, fire_clip, set_tempo and arrangement tools such as duplicate_to_arrangement and create_locator.
- Data and privacy
- Session data goes to your model provider. Anonymous usage telemetry is on by default; dataset recording of prompts, MIDI, names and device settings is opt-in and may be published to train music models. ABLETON_MCP_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true disables both. The Remote Script socket listens on localhost port 9877 without authentication.
- Cost at scale
- Free. The cost is model tokens: session snapshots and browser trees can be large, and an open issue reports heavy token use on longer sessions.
- Limits
- Run only one MCP client against it at a time. Complex arrangements time out unless split into steps; the server and Remote Script versions must match after upgrades, and about 49 issues and pull requests are open.
What’s good
- Works on the live session: tracks, clips, devices, arrangement
- One-command install for the server and Remote Script
- 37 tools, a modest context cost
- Socket bound to loopback since 1.4.5
What’s not
- Anonymous telemetry on by default
- Opt-in dataset mode may publish your MIDI and prompts
- Some tools report success for changes Live drops
- Only Live's default devices and browser items
Best for
Ableton users who want an assistant for session setup, MIDI sketches and arrangement scaffolding rather than finished songs.
Ableton MCP alternatives
Ableton MCP: common questions
- Is Ableton MCP worth it?
- Ableton Live's most-used AI bridge, good for sketching ideas and tedious session setup, and much weaker as a composer than its demos suggest. We rate it 3.8 out of 5.
- How much does Ableton MCP cost?
- Free and open source (MIT). Requires your own Ableton Live 10 or newer licence.
- What are the downsides of Ableton MCP?
- Anonymous telemetry on by default; opt-in dataset mode may publish your MIDI and prompts; some tools report success for changes Live drops; only Live's default devices and browser items.
- Who is Ableton MCP best for?

- How much does Ableton MCP cost for a team or in production?
- Free. The cost is model tokens: session snapshots and browser trees can be large, and an open issue reports heavy token use on longer sessions.
- Is Ableton MCP safe for company data?
- Session data goes to your model provider. Anonymous usage telemetry is on by default; dataset recording of prompts, MIDI, names and device settings is opt-in and may be published to train music models. ABLETON_MCP_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true disables both. The Remote Script socket listens on localhost port 9877 without authentication.
