3.5/5

A straightforward cloud route from an agent to an Aqara home that works as documented, but gives an AI batch control of real devices with no published privacy terms for the service behind it.

What is Aqara MCP Server?

Aqara MCP Server is a remote service run by Aqara Agent, the smart-home maker's AI layer, at https://agent.aqara.com/open/mcp over Streamable HTTP. After signing in with an Aqara account, you copy an API key from the login page and pass it as a bearer token. Twenty tools cover homes and rooms, device status and control, batch control by room and type, device logs, scenes, automations (read-only), electricity use and cost, lighting effects, and firmware checks and upgrades.

Aqara replaced its original local stdio server with this hosted one on 22 May 2026 and stopped updating the old version. The MIT-licensed GitHub repository, about 49 stars, now holds documentation in eight languages rather than server code; its last commit, on 17 September 2026, rewrote it for the remote integration.

Is Aqara MCP Server worth it?

Setup is about as short as remote MCP gets: sign in at agent.aqara.com, copy the aqara_api_key, add one URL and an Authorization header to Cursor, Codex or another Streamable HTTP client, and restart. The 20 tools are designed for natural requests. fuzzy_device_batch_control takes a room and a device type and acts on all of them, so turn off everything in the living room or set all air conditioners to 26 degrees is one call. energy_consumption_inquiry_for_device returns usage or cost in steps from 30 minutes to a month, which suits a monthly bill review.

The risk lies in the same tools. Batch control with an empty room list can mean the whole home; scene_run executes whatever a scene does; device_firmware_upgrade starts updates on matching devices. The README's own advice is to run the query tools first and confirm IDs before controlling anything. Device types include Camera, and the documented attributes cover power, temperature, curtains and volume; the README describes no permission scopes, so the key should be treated as full control of the account.

The move to a hosted service trades local control for maintenance. Commands now go from your client to Aqara Agent and then to the Aqara cloud, with no local option, so an outage or an expired key stops everything. Aqara's login page carries no pricing, privacy policy or key-expiry details, and the forum announcement does not add them. Automations can be listed and their history read but not created or edited. Aqara also recommends its Agent Skills package over MCP for clients that support skills.

For mixed-brand homes, Home Assistant's server reaches far more devices and keeps control local; this server makes sense when the home is mostly Aqara and the cloud path is acceptable.

Where it earns its place

  • A homeowner with 30 Aqara devices across two floors

Find out which rooms drove last month's electricity bill

Ask for energy_consumption_inquiry_for_position by month with cost included, then drill into the top room by device. Free to run; figures depend on devices that report energy.

  • A landlord managing a short-let flat

Check every device is online and on current firmware between guests

Call device_firmware_inquiry for the whole home to list online status and available versions, then start upgrades only after confirming the device list. Avoid running upgrades while guests are in.

Before you commit

Setup
Sign in at agent.aqara.com/login, copy the aqara_api_key, and add https://agent.aqara.com/open/mcp as a Streamable HTTP server with an Authorization: Bearer header. In Codex, name an environment variable for the token rather than pasting it.
Integrations
Twenty tools: homes and positions, device query and control, batch control, device logs, scenes, automation history, energy by room or device, lighting effects and firmware. Aqara Agent Skills cover the same ground for skill-capable clients.
Data and privacy
All commands and home data pass through Aqara Agent and the Aqara cloud, operated by Lumi United Technology. Retention, training use and region handling are not published on the Aqara Agent pages.
Limits
No read-only mode or per-tool scopes are described; automations cannot be created or edited; key expiry is not documented, though the README lists expired credentials as a connection failure to check.

What’s good

  • Official and hosted; one URL and a key
  • Batch control by room and device type
  • Energy use and cost down to 30-minute steps
  • Firmware status and upgrades from chat

What’s not

  • Cloud-only since May 2026; no local mode
  • No permission scopes described; treat the key as full control
  • No published privacy, pricing or key-expiry terms
  • Automations are read-only

Best for

Owners of mostly-Aqara homes who want to check status, run scenes and review energy from Cursor or Codex, and who are comfortable sending commands through Aqara's cloud.
