What is C64 Bridge?
C64 Bridge, from the developer Chris Gleissner, connects an MCP client to a Commodore 64. It drives a C64 Ultimate or Ultimate 64 board and U2-family cartridges through their REST API, or the VICE emulator through its Binary Monitor, and can switch between them in one conversation. The agent can upload and run BASIC, 6510 assembly, PRG and CRT files, read and write memory, capture the screen, manage disk images and drives, and compose or play SID music.
It is GPL-2.0, written in TypeScript on the official MCP SDK, published on npm and listed in the Official MCP Registry. It has about 41 GitHub stars and 342 npm downloads in the week to 5 November 2026, and released 1.0.7 on 5 November 2026.
How to install C64 Bridge
npx -y c64bridge@latestIs C64 Bridge worth it?
C64 Bridge is far more thorough than most hobby MCP servers. It groups its surface into 17 tools, 27 resources and 10 prompts, and every operation in the README is marked for which of the three backends supports it: c64u for the C64 Ultimate and Ultimate 64, u2 for the U2, U2+ and U2+L cartridges, and vice for the emulator. The VICE backend adds breakpoints, registers and stepping; the Ultimate adds machine input, video streaming and frame capture. A built-in retrieval index of C64 documentation and prompts is meant to keep the model from inventing memory addresses.
The security picture is the part to read twice. On hardware the server talks to the Ultimate's REST API, by default at the host c64u on port 80 with no network password, and sends the password as an X-Password header when you set one. Whoever can reach that port on your network can do what the agent does. The tools are not read-only: they write memory, reset the machine, change firmware settings, save them to flash, reset them to factory defaults, and start a video stream towards any host and port you name. The VICE monitor listens on 127.0.0.1:6502, and the optional HTTP mode binds to 127.0.0.1 only, on port 3000 in the code although the README's curl examples use 8000.
The maintainer is candid about flaws. An audit in the repository found that a failed request could leave the network password in an error object that reached stderr, diagnostics files and tool results; 1.0.7 masks it there and also masks FTP, Telnet and Wi-Fi credentials when the firmware's configuration is read, unless includeSecretValues is set. The same release notes say a test install from npm still reports 30 high-severity audit findings from the zod 3.x copies pulled in by the jimp image library, and that masking only catches the exact configured password text.
Setup is light for a hardware project: Node.js 24, then npx -y c64bridge@latest, with C64_MODE and the host in an environment variable or ~/.c64bridge.json. Diagnostics are written to ~/.c64bridge/diagnostics unless disabled. With 41 stars this is a one-person project, and newer operations depend on recent Ultimate firmware, but the documentation is better than that number suggests.
Where it earns its place
A retro hobbyist with an Ultimate 64 on the home network
Write a BASIC or 6510 assembly program and see it run on the real machine
Ask the agent to write the program, upload and run it, then read the screen back to check the output. Free apart from the hardware; set a network password on the Ultimate first.
A demo-scene coder debugging a routine
Find why an assembly loop corrupts screen memory
Switch to the vice backend, set breakpoints and step through the code while the agent reads registers and memory, then move the fixed program back to hardware in the same session.
A chiptune musician
Sketch and audition SID tunes without a tracker
Use the c64_sound tools to compose or generate a tune and play it on the SID, or render it through VICE audio capture for headless checks.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Install Node.js 24+, then run npx -y c64bridge@latest or claude mcp add c64bridge -- npx -y c64bridge@latest. Set C64_MODE (c64u, u2 or vice) and the host, port and password in environment variables or ~/.c64bridge.json; VICE can be started and managed by the server.
- Integrations
- C64 Ultimate and Ultimate 64 over the Ultimate REST API, U2-family cartridges over a REST subset, VICE over its Binary Monitor. Works with Claude Code, VS Code, Visual Studio, Cursor and any stdio MCP client.
- Data and privacy
- Runs locally. Programs, screen contents and memory reads go to your model provider. Talks to the Ultimate over the LAN, by default port 80 with no password; VICE monitor on 127.0.0.1:6502; optional HTTP mode on 127.0.0.1. Diagnostics files go to ~/.c64bridge/diagnostics unless C64BRIDGE_DISABLE_DIAGNOSTICS=1. An optional GITHUB_TOKEN is used only for retrieval discovery.
- Cost at scale
- Free under GPL-2.0. The only cost is the hardware, if you use it rather than VICE.
- Limits
- Each backend supports a different subset of operations; U2 cartridges have no machine input, debug registers or streaming. Password masking matches only the exact configured text. Dependency audit findings remain in npm installs.
What’s good
- One conversation can span real hardware and the VICE emulator
- 17 tools with per-backend support marked in the README
- Debugger access through VICE: breakpoints, registers, stepping
- 1.0.7 masks the network password and firmware credentials
What’s not
- Ultimate REST API defaults to port 80 with no password
- Tools can reset, reflash settings and stream video to any host
- npm install still reports 30 high-severity audit findings
- Single maintainer; newer tools need recent Ultimate firmware
Best for
Commodore 64 hobbyists and demo coders with a C64 Ultimate or VICE who want an agent to write, run and debug programs on the machine itself.
C64 Bridge alternatives
C64 Bridge: common questions
- Is C64 Bridge worth it?
- A carefully built niche server that gives an agent full control of a real Commodore 64, which is exactly why it belongs on a trusted home network and nowhere else. We rate it 3.6 out of 5.
- How much does C64 Bridge cost?
- Free and open source (GPL-2.0). A C64 Ultimate, Ultimate 64 or U2 cartridge is needed for real hardware; VICE is free.
- What are the downsides of C64 Bridge?
- Ultimate REST API defaults to port 80 with no password; tools can reset, reflash settings and stream video to any host; npm install still reports 30 high-severity audit findings; single maintainer; newer tools need recent Ultimate firmware.
- Who is C64 Bridge best for?
- Commodore 64 hobbyists and demo coders with a C64 Ultimate or VICE who want an agent to write, run and debug programs on the machine itself.
- How much does C64 Bridge cost for a team or in production?
- Free under GPL-2.0. The only cost is the hardware, if you use it rather than VICE.
- Is C64 Bridge safe for company data?
- Runs locally. Programs, screen contents and memory reads go to your model provider. Talks to the Ultimate over the LAN, by default port 80 with no password; VICE monitor on 127.0.0.1:6502; optional HTTP mode on 127.0.0.1.
