Our rating

3.9/5

Kagi's rankings, piped into an agent at a premium, through a server with two tools and no OAuth.

What it is

Kagi's server is hosted at https://mcp.kagi.com/mcp with no install, or runs locally with uvx kagimcp (version 1.0.2, 7 July 2026) and a KAGI_API_KEY. The hosted and HTTP modes take the key as a bearer token; OAuth is on the roadmap but not supported. The repository's last commit was also on 7 July 2026, and no entry for it appears in the official MCP registry.

It has two tools. kagi_search_fetch searches web, news, videos, podcasts and images, with optional markdown extracts of the top results, filters and Kagi Lenses. kagi_extract returns a page's full content as markdown. The earlier FastGPT and Summarizer tools were removed; Kagi says the Summarizer is not yet available in its v1 API.

API keys can be restricted to particular products and IP addresses, and each key can be set to use or ignore your account settings, such as blocked or promoted sites. The repo is MIT licensed.

Our review

Kagi's server exists to give an agent Kagi's ranking, and that is nearly all it does. Results follow your account's blocked and boosted domains and Lenses, and because each API key can be set to use or ignore account settings, a team can run one agent on neutral ranking and another on a curated one.

The tool set is lean. kagi_search_fetch covers five result types and can return markdown extracts of the top results in the same call, which saves the extra round trip most search servers need. kagi_extract reads up to 10 URLs per API request. Operators can strip parameters such as date ranges and domain filters from the schema with KAGI_HIDDEN_PARAMS, which both stops a model misusing them and shortens the tool description it has to read.

Price is the obstacle. Search is $12 per 1,000 requests and Extract $4 per 1,000 pages, with no free allowance. A research agent that makes eight searches and reads five pages per task spends about 11.6 cents a task, or roughly $116 for 1,000 tasks a month. Kagi lets you set a spending limit in dollars, and an agent that loops should have one.

The server also looks quiet. Nothing has been committed since July, OAuth is still a roadmap item, and on Family and Team plans only the account owner can open the API portal, so a team rollout means one person issuing every key.

Where it earns its place

  • A solo consultant who pays for Kagi and has blocked content-farm domains

Have Claude research client questions without SEO spam in the sources

Add the hosted endpoint with a key set to use account settings, so blocks and boosts carry over. At 30 searches a day that is about $11 a month on top of the subscription.

  • An AI engineer building a citation-backed research agent

Search and read sources in as few tool calls as possible

Call kagi_search_fetch with extract_count so the top results arrive as markdown, and hide date and domain filters with KAGI_HIDDEN_PARAMS if the model misuses them. Kagi's pricing page does not say whether inline extracts are billed on top of the $12 per 1,000 searches.

  • An IT lead at a 20-person firm on a Kagi Team plan

Give staff agents search access within a budget

Only the account owner can use the API portal, so the owner issues one key per agent, restricts each to Search and Extract and to office IPs, and sets a dollar spending limit. Billing arrives when usage reaches $100 or at month end.

Before you commit

Setup
Point an HTTP-capable client at https://mcp.kagi.com/mcp with an Authorization: Bearer header, or run uvx kagimcp with KAGI_API_KEY; the README documents Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Kiro, OpenCode and Smithery. A key from the API portal is the only prerequisite.
Integrations
Two read-only tools: kagi_search_fetch (web, news, videos, podcasts and images, with filters, Lenses and optional extracts) and kagi_extract (full page as markdown).
Data and privacy
The key can spend money but cannot change the account. Queries go to Kagi in either mode, and through Kagi's hosted server if you use it; API data handling falls under Kagi's API terms, not the README. Extracted pages are untrusted web content in the model's context.
Cost at scale
Search $12 per 1,000 requests, Extract $4 per 1,000 pages (up to 10 URLs a request), invoiced at $100 or monthly, with enterprise volume discounts on quote. An agent making 1,000 searches a day spends about $360 a month on search alone.
Limits
Rate limits are not published. Default timeouts are 10 seconds for search and 30 for extract, with two retries, and the Summarizer is not yet in the v1 API.

What's good

  • Results follow your Kagi blocks, boosts and Lenses
  • Search can return page extracts in one call
  • Hosted endpoint, or uvx kagimcp locally
  • Keys can be limited by product and IP, with a dollar spending cap

What's not

  • $12 per 1,000 searches with no free allowance
  • Only two tools; FastGPT and Summarizer removed
  • Bearer API key only; OAuth still on the roadmap
  • On Family and Team plans only the owner can issue keys

Best for

Kagi users who want agents to search with the same rankings and filters they use themselves.
