4.0/5

A well-built server whose real constraint is monday.com's daily API cap, not the tools themselves.

What it is

monday.com recommends its hosted server at https://mcp.monday.com/mcp, which signs in with OAuth through a monday marketplace app and lets admins limit access to specific workspaces. There are setup guides for Claude Desktop, Cursor, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Mistral's Le Chat and Gemini CLI, which has its own extension.

The open-source package @mondaydotcomorg/monday-api-mcp (MIT, version 3.3.1, September 2026) runs locally on Node.js 20 or later with a personal API token. Its standard tools create, update and delete items, post updates, move items between groups, create boards, groups and columns, delete columns, list users and teams, and create and read forms. An apps mode adds tools for building on monday's Apps Framework.

A beta option, Dynamic API Tools, adds all_monday_api, get_graphql_schema and get_type_details, which let the model write and run any GraphQL query or mutation. A --read-only flag limits the local server to reads, but it cannot be combined with the dynamic tools.

Our review

monday.com has done the admin's homework: a hosted server with OAuth and per-workspace limits for most users, and an MIT-licensed local server for teams that want to read and change the code. The standard tool list is short and clearly named, which keeps the context window lean compared with servers that expose every endpoint.

It is not as cautious as it first looks. Delete tools for items and columns sit in the default set, not behind the dynamic mode, so an assistant with a write-capable token can remove data during an ordinary board tidy-up. The --read-only flag is the fix for reporting work, though the README documents it for the local server and says nothing about an equivalent on the hosted one. Dynamic API Tools go further and hand the model the whole GraphQL API, which is useful for one-off migrations and too much for a shared assistant.

The ceiling that teams will hit first is monday.com's API limit. Free, Standard and Basic accounts get 1,000 calls a day, Pro 10,000 and Enterprise 25,000, and high-complexity queries can count as several calls. An agent that walks a large board item by item to write a weekly status report can burn a few hundred calls per run, which turns the cheapest plans into a real constraint.

Against Linear's server, monday's has more switches and a bigger surface to secure. Against Asana's, the tool documentation in the README is clearer. The local server only accepts a personal token, which carries the user's full permissions, so the hosted OAuth route is the sensible one anywhere more than one person is involved.

Where it earns its place

  • A delivery manager running 12 client boards on monday Pro

Write the Friday status report from board data

Run the local server with --read-only so the assistant can read items and updates but not change them; a weekly run of a few hundred calls fits easily inside Pro's 10,000 a day.

  • A sales-ops lead at a 40-person agency

Turn meeting notes into board items with owners and due dates

The hosted server creates items, sets column values and posts updates through OAuth, limited to the sales workspace. Check the plan's daily cap first: on Standard, 1,000 calls is a few dozen meetings' worth of item creation.

  • A platform engineer migrating a legacy board structure

Bulk-rename columns and restructure groups across 30 boards

Enable Dynamic API Tools on a local, admin-supervised session so the model can write GraphQL mutations; the 40-per-minute cap on board creation and duplication sets the pace.

Before you commit

Setup
Add https://mcp.monday.com/mcp and approve the monday marketplace app in OAuth, or run npx @mondaydotcomorg/monday-api-mcp@latest with a personal token from Avatar, Developers, My access tokens.
Integrations
Standard tools include create_item, delete_item, change_item_column_values, move_item_to_group, create_update, create_board, create_group, create_column, delete_column, list_users_and_teams, create_form and get_form; apps mode and dynamic GraphQL tools are opt-in.
Data and privacy
Tokens act with the signing-in user's full permissions; the hosted server can be limited to chosen workspaces. Item updates written by other people are untrusted text the model reads.
Cost at scale
No server fee. The binding cost is API quota: 1,000 calls a day on Free, Standard and Basic, 10,000 on Pro and 25,000 on Enterprise, with more available through monday's API add-on.
Limits
1,000 to 5,000 queries a minute depending on plan, 40 board creations a minute, 100 items per items query; read-only cannot be combined with dynamic tools.
