Neon MCP Server

Neon’s hosted server for Postgres projects, branches, SQL and branch-tested migrations, with read-only and per-project grants in the URL.

4.4/5

Branch-tested migrations and URL-pinned read-only grants make this a safe way to let an agent near Postgres, in development, which is where Neon says it belongs.

What it is

The Neon MCP Server turns plain-language requests into Neon API calls and SQL. Neon now describes itself as "from Databricks" and sells a wider backend around its Postgres, and the server has grown with it: alongside projects, branches, compute endpoints, querying, schema and branch-based migrations, it covers snapshots, Neon Auth, the Data API, Functions, Object Storage, Realtime, observability and docs search, 119 tools in all when unfiltered.

Connect to https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp with OAuth or a Neon API key as a bearer header; npx neon@latest init configures Cursor, VS Code and Claude Code in one step. URL parameters fix the grant: readonly, projectId, category and roleName, which pins SQL to one Postgres role. The SSE endpoint is deprecated, and the standalone npm package has not been published since 0.6.5 in September 2025, so the hosted server is the maintained path.

Our review

Neon gives an agent the one thing most database servers lack: a cheap place to be wrong. prepare_database_migration applies a change on a temporary branch, the agent tests it there, and complete_database_migration applies it to the parent; query tuning follows the same pattern. That beats an ALTER TABLE run straight against the main branch, and branching is included on every plan.

Access control has improved markedly. The URL can fix a read-only grant, a single project, a set of tool categories and a pinned Postgres role, and an OAuth token issued against that URL cannot be widened on the consent page. In read-only mode run_sql still works but inside a READ ONLY transaction, and get_connection_string is withheld because the string carries a privileged password. Few hosted database servers go this far.

The catch is breadth. Unfiltered, the server publishes 119 tools across 13 categories, and even the five-category URL Neon recommends still lists 61. Neon says plainly that the server is for local development and IDE use, not production, a warning that sits awkwardly beside tools such as delete_project and rotate_realtime_secret.

Two details a security review will catch. Authenticated sessions send your Neon account ID, name and email to Neon’s analytics, with each tool name but not its arguments, and only self-hosters can switch that off. With OAuth the server defaults to your personal account, so organisation projects need an org or project ID in the prompt, or better, in the URL. Supabase’s server now covers a similar product range; Neon’s branch-first workflow remains the sharper tool for schema changes.

Where it earns its place

  • A full-stack developer on a Next.js app using Neon

Add a column and backfill it without breaking the main branch

The agent calls prepare_database_migration, runs test queries on the temporary branch and completes only after review. Branches are included within plan limits (10 per project on Free and Launch), and extra branches cost $1.50 a branch-month on paid plans.

  • A product manager with read access to a staging project

Query realistic data in plain English without any risk of writes

Hand them a URL with readonly=true, one projectId and a roleName such as app_reader: SQL runs in READ ONLY transactions as that role and connection strings stay hidden. Compute costs $0.106 per CU-hour on Launch and scales to zero after 5 idle minutes.

  • An engineer at an agent platform giving each sandbox its own database

Create, seed and delete short-lived Postgres projects per session

Projects, branches and endpoints tools cover the lifecycle, and Free allows 100 projects with 100 CU-hours each a month. Neon’s not-for-production warning applies, so at volume the Neon API called directly is the safer integration, with the MCP server kept for developers.

Before you commit

Setup
npx neon@latest init configures Cursor, VS Code and Claude Code; otherwise npx add-mcp with the hosted URL and an OAuth login, or an API key in the Authorization header. Workspaces using IP Allow must add 34.192.103.46 and 23.22.233.166.
Integrations
119 tools across 13 categories (projects, branches, endpoints, snapshots, schema, querying, neon_auth, data_api, observability, docs, functions, storage, realtime); 51 remain in read-only mode. Observability log tools need the Neon Platform Beta and work only in aws-us-east-2.
Data and privacy
The hosted server on Vercel acts with your API key or OAuth grant and sees the query results it returns; tool-call analytics include account ID, name and email but not arguments. SOC 2 reports, HIPAA and IP Allow are available on the Scale plan only.
Cost at scale
No server fee. Launch bills $0.106 per CU-hour and $0.35 per GB-month, Scale $0.222 per CU-hour. A 0.25 CU branch left running all month is about 180 CU-hours, roughly $19 on Launch, so agents that create branches and forget them cost real money.
Limits
Neon does not recommend it for production. A role pinned with roleName limits SQL only; management tools still act with the full API key or token, and project-scoped mode hides delete_project and other account-wide tools.

What's good

  • Migrations and query tuning tested on throwaway branches
  • URL-fixed read-only, project and Postgres-role grants
  • Hosted with OAuth or API key; one-command editor setup
  • Category filters cut the tool list

What's not

  • Vendor says not for production use
  • 119 tools unfiltered; 61 with the recommended filter
  • Hosted analytics receive your name and email
  • OAuth defaults to personal-account projects

Best for

Developers on Neon Postgres who want an agent to manage projects, branches and schema changes during development.
