What is agentic-obs (OBS Studio MCP)?
There is no official or dominant OBS Studio MCP server; the field is a dozen small community projects. agentic-obs, by ironystock, is the most-starred one with a commit in the past year, at about 39 stars, and the most complete. It talks to OBS Studio 28 or newer through the obs-websocket server built into OBS (default port 4455) and exposes 81 tools in nine groups, plus 4 resources and 14 prompts for workflows such as a pre-stream checklist or an audio check.
It is written in Go, installs with go install github.com/ironystock/agentic-obs@latest, runs over stdio, and stores its OBS connection details and presets in a local SQLite file. It also serves a web dashboard and screenshot images on localhost port 8765. The repository is MIT-licensed, has no tagged releases, and its last commit was on 18 April 2026. The older royshil/obs-mcp (about 150 stars) has had no commit since August 2025.
How to install agentic-obs (OBS Studio MCP)
go install github.com/ironystock/agentic-obs@latestIs agentic-obs (OBS Studio MCP) worth it?
agentic-obs covers nearly everything a streamer or producer touches in OBS. Beyond scene switching and start-stop recording, it creates text, image, colour, browser and media sources, sets their position, crop and z-order, adds and edits filters, changes transitions, toggles the virtual camera and replay buffer, works studio mode and fires hotkeys. Scene presets save which sources are visible and restore them later. Tool groups can be switched off at runtime with set_tool_config, which keeps the 81-tool list from crowding a model's context when only recording control is needed.
The screenshot feature is what makes it agentic rather than a remote control. create_screenshot_source captures a scene on a schedule and exposes the image as an MCP resource and over HTTP, so a model can look at the output and spot a missing overlay or a black capture. That HTTP server and the web dashboard listen on localhost port 8765, a second local surface beyond the OBS WebSocket itself. The README recommends setting an obs-websocket password; without one, any local process can control OBS anyway, with or without this server.
Maturity is the problem. There are no releases, so go install pulls whatever is on the main branch, and Go 1.25.5 or newer is required to build it. The README's licence section still reads 'Add your license here', although the repository carries an MIT licence file. The last commit was in April 2026, with about 17 issues open, and the 'future enhancements' list still includes multi-instance support and real-time event notifications.
The alternatives are smaller still. sbroenne/mcp-server-obs is Windows-only, .NET 10 and seven multi-action tools, but was updated this week and ships as a VS Code extension; xDarkzx/OBS_MCP claims 148 tools on about 18 stars. For a live broadcast, any of them should sit behind a human who can take the stream back; an agent that triggers a scene change at the wrong moment is visible to every viewer.
Where it earns its place
A solo Twitch streamer running three shows a week
Run the same pre-stream checklist and scene setup every time
Call the stream-launch prompt: the agent works through a pre-stream checklist, checks audio inputs and applies a scene preset before you go live. Free; keep the final start_streaming call manual.
A developer-relations engineer recording product demos
Record a series of screen captures with consistent overlays
Have the agent create a text source for the title, set its transform, start and stop recording per take, and use a screenshot source to check the frame before each one.
A church AV volunteer producing a weekly livestream
Switch between camera and slides scenes on cue
Set scenes and transitions in advance and let the agent trigger them from a run sheet. The project's quiet maintenance means testing after every OBS update before a live service.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Enable the WebSocket server in OBS (Tools, WebSocket Server Settings, port 4455, set a password), run go install github.com/ironystock/agentic-obs@latest, and add agentic-obs as a stdio command in Claude Desktop or another client. It auto-detects OBS on localhost:4455 on first run.
- Integrations
- 81 tools in Core, Sources, Audio, Layout, Visual, Design, Filters, Transitions and Automation groups plus 4 meta tools; 4 resources (scenes, screenshots, screenshot URLs, presets) and 14 prompts. A TUI dashboard runs with --tui.
- Data and privacy
- Local only. OBS host, port and password are saved in a SQLite file, agentic-obs.db. Screenshots and a dashboard are served over HTTP on localhost:8765. Scene names and screenshots reach your model provider through the client.
- Cost at scale
- Free. The cost is context: 81 tool definitions in every session unless groups are disabled, and screenshots add image tokens each time the model looks.
- Limits
- No releases, last commit April 2026, about 17 open issues. Multi-instance OBS and real-time event notifications are listed as future work.
What’s good
- 81 tools across scenes, sources, filters, audio and outputs
- Screenshot sources let the model see the output
- Tool groups can be disabled at runtime
- Single Go binary over stdio
What’s not
- About 39 stars; no commits since April 2026
- No tagged releases; installs from main
- Extra HTTP dashboard on localhost:8765
- Needs Go 1.25.5+ to install
Best for
Streamers and video producers comfortable building Go tools who want an agent to set up scenes and run recording sessions in OBS.
