What is Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo)?
This fork of the mcp-servers-for-revit project, maintained by the GitHub user LuDattilo, lets Claude, Cline and other MCP clients read, create, change and delete elements in the model open in Autodesk Revit 2023 to 2027. A TypeScript MCP server talks stdio to the client and forwards each call over TCP to a C# Revit add-in on localhost port 8080. On top of the upstream project it adds language-independent category handling, a PowerShell installer and a dockable chat panel inside Revit that calls the Anthropic API directly.
The fork was created in March 2026 and has about 87 stars and 30 forks under the MIT licence. Its last release, v2.2.1, came out on 9 April 2026, and the README gives the tool count as both 124 and 138. Unlike AEC Model Bridge, which holds every change for human approval, this server applies changes to the model as soon as the AI asks.
How to install Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo)
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command "irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LuDattilo/revit-mcp-server/main/scripts/install.ps1 | iex"Is Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo) worth it?
This server is distinct from AEC Model Bridge, which we reviewed earlier, and the difference is the whole story. AEC Model Bridge blocks every write until a person approves a hashed plan and admits it has never run in live Revit. This fork takes the opposite approach: tools such as delete_element, purge_unused, change_element_type and sync_csv_parameters run on the active model immediately, and the README says it is fully tested on Revit 2023, 2025, 2026 and 2027. It also reaches Revit 2023, which AEC Model Bridge does not.
The tool list is broad and practical for production work: model health scoring from 0 to 100, clash detection between element sets, material take-offs, batch sheet creation, view templates, tagging, renumbering, and export to PDF, DWG, IFC and CSV. send_code_to_revit compiles and runs arbitrary C# against the open document, wrapped in a transaction by default. The README warns that each AI action is its own Revit transaction, not one undo step, and that parameter names must match the Revit UI language.
The security model is thin. The add-in listens on the loopback interface, which keeps the network out, but in our reading of the source there is no token or other check on the connection, so any program running under your Windows account can send commands, including the arbitrary C# tool. The built-in chat panel runs Claude Sonnet 4.6 with a system prompt that tells it to execute actions without unnecessary confirmations, and it reads the API key from a plain text file at %USERPROFILE%\.claude\api_key.txt. An open issue from October 2026 asks for a setting to turn the panel off. Model data returned by any tool goes to Anthropic or whichever provider your client uses.
There are two packaging snags. The README's install line, npx -y mcp-server-for-revit, fetches an npm package published from the upstream repository at version 1.0.0 in February 2026, not this fork's 2.2 server, so the extra tools need the server folder built locally. And the v2.2.1 release ships add-in zips for Revit 2023 to 2026 only, despite the 2027 claims. The upstream mcp-servers-for-revit repository, with about 430 stars, has not been pushed since April 2026 either, so neither line is moving quickly. For a firm, AEC Model Bridge's approval gate is the safer starting point; this fork suits a single BIM specialist on a backed-up copy who wants breadth and speed.
Where it earns its place
A BIM manager at a 30-person architecture practice
Score a model's health before issuing it to consultants
Ask for check_model_health, get_warnings and purge_unused with its default dryRun setting, and read the grade and recommendations before deciding what to fix by hand. Read-only calls carry little risk beyond sending model data to the AI provider.
A project architect preparing a stage submission
Create and number 40 sheets with views placed
Have the agent run batch_create_sheets, place_viewport and batch_rename on a copy of the central model, then check the set before syncing. Each action is its own transaction, so undoing a bad batch takes many Ctrl+Z presses.
A quantity surveyor working alongside the design team
Pull material quantities and room data into a spreadsheet
Use get_material_quantities, export_room_data and export_schedule to write CSV files for the cost plan. It saves rebuilding schedules by hand; the figures are only as good as the model's modelling discipline.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Windows 10 or 11 with Revit 2023 to 2027 and Node.js 18. Run the PowerShell installer, or extract the release zip for your Revit year into the Addins folder, then add the MCP server to Claude Code or Claude Desktop and switch the bridge on from the Add-Ins ribbon. Building the fork's own server needs npm install and npm run build in server/.
- Integrations
- Between 124 and 138 tools by the README's own counts: project and model info, analysis and clash detection, materials, element creation and modification, views and sheets, annotation, data export and batch clean-up, plus send_code_to_revit for arbitrary C#. Built-in chat panel calls the Anthropic API.
- Data and privacy
- Runs locally; the add-in listens on 127.0.0.1 port 8080 (falling back up to 8089) with no authentication. Model data the tools return goes to your AI provider. The chat panel's API key sits in a plain text file or an environment variable. store_project_data keeps metadata in a local database.
- Cost at scale
- The software is free under MIT. Real costs are a Revit subscription per user, the AI client's plan, and Anthropic API tokens for the chat panel, which runs with a 10K-token thinking budget per turn.
- Limits
- Active document only; parameter names are language-specific; large exports return in one response and can time out; send_code_to_revit can fail on assembly conflicts with other add-ins. About 15 open issues and pull requests.
What’s good
- 124 or more tools, from clash checks to batch PDF, DWG and IFC export
- Claims full testing on Revit 2023, 2025, 2026 and 2027
- Works with any Revit UI language for categories
- One-line PowerShell installer detects Revit versions
What’s not
- No approval step; deletes and purges run at once
- Localhost bridge has no authentication, with an arbitrary C# tool behind it
- README install command fetches the older upstream npm package
- No commit since April 2026
Best for
Individual BIM specialists who want broad agent control of Revit on backed-up copies of models and accept that nothing waits for approval.
Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo) alternatives
Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo): common questions
- Is Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo) worth it?
- Wide Revit coverage for a single practitioner working on copies of models, but changes land the moment the AI asks and the localhost bridge has no authentication at all. We rate it 3.3 out of 5.
- How much does Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo) cost?
- Free and open source (MIT). Needs a licensed Revit 2023 to 2027; the built-in chat panel uses your own Anthropic API key and is billed per token.
- What are the downsides of Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo)?
- No approval step; deletes and purges run at once; localhost bridge has no authentication, with an arbitrary C# tool behind it; rEADME install command fetches the older upstream npm package; no commit since April 2026.
- Who is Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo) best for?
- Individual BIM specialists who want broad agent control of Revit on backed-up copies of models and accept that nothing waits for approval.
- How much does Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo) cost for a team or in production?
- The software is free under MIT. Real costs are a Revit subscription per user, the AI client's plan, and Anthropic API tokens for the chat panel, which runs with a 10K-token thinking budget per turn.
- Is Revit MCP Server (LuDattilo) safe for company data?
- Runs locally; the add-in listens on 127.0.0.1 port 8080 (falling back up to 8089) with no authentication. Model data the tools return goes to your AI provider. The chat panel's API key sits in a plain text file or an environment variable. store_project_data keeps metadata in a local database.
