What is SEC EDGAR MCP (SEC-API.io)?
SEC EDGAR MCP from SEC-API.io is a remote MCP server that gives an agent the company's commercial EDGAR index: 20 million filings and 100 million exhibits from 1993 to the present, more than 1.1 million filer entities including delisted ones, and structured datasets for 13F holdings, insider trades, executive pay, Form D and Reg A offerings, Form ADV advisers and SEC enforcement actions. There is nothing to install; the client connects over Streamable HTTP with an API key.
The GitHub repository, MIT-licensed, holds documentation and per-client setup guides rather than server code, and released v1.1.1 on 14 August 2026. Free alternatives that read EDGAR's own public API exist, the most established being stefanoamorelli/sec-edgar-mcp (AGPL-3.0, about 384 stars, 21 tools, v1.1.0 in August 2026).
How to install SEC EDGAR MCP (SEC-API.io)
https://api.sec-api.io/mcpIs SEC EDGAR MCP (SEC-API.io) worth it?
Coverage is the case for this server. Its 49 tools reach well past the 10-K: an extractor that returns one section of a 10-K, 10-Q or 8-K, XBRL converted to JSON, 13F holdings, Form 3/4/5 insider trades, Schedule 13D/13G, N-PORT fund holdings, executive compensation, audit fees, Exhibit 21 subsidiaries, and SEC enforcement actions, litigation releases and AAERs. The README's worked examples, such as comparing two years of Lam Research risk factors or listing 8-K Item 1.05 cybersecurity disclosures, show the kind of cross-filing question that is slow to answer from EDGAR by hand.
The tool list and the price list do not match. Pricing shows Full-Text Search, 13D/13G, N-PORT, N-CEN, N-PX, Subsidiaries and Float only from the $199 Business plan, and Form ADV and several compensation and governance datasets only on Enterprise. An agent on the $49 plan sees all 49 tools and finds some of them refused. The free key is a trial rather than a tier: 100 calls in total, then HTTP 429.
The documentation is unusually frank about context cost. There is no cap on response size; form-npx-file returned 1.94 MB, about 500,000 tokens, in one call, and form-nport can exceed 100 MB. Most search tools default to 50 rows, and paging stops at 10,000 results. The docs tell agents to call unfamiliar tools with size 1 first and to ask the extractor for a section instead of downloading a whole filing.
The key goes in an Authorization header or, for clients with only a URL field, in the query string, where it can end up in logs and screenshots; the docs recommend the header. Filings are public, but your queries and the key's usage pass through SEC-API.io. For occasional lookups of 10-Ks, financial statements and Form 4s, the free stefanoamorelli server, which calls EDGAR directly with only a contact User-Agent, costs nothing and is enough.
Where it earns its place
An equity analyst at a ten-person hedge fund
Track which funds added or cut a position last quarter
Ask the agent to query form-13f-holdings for the ticker across two quarters and summarise the changes. Works on the $49 plan; adding 13D/13G activist filings needs Business at $199/month.
A compliance officer at a regional broker-dealer
Check a new hire's or counterparty's regulatory history
Search SEC enforcement actions, litigation releases and administrative proceedings by name, then pull the releases. Form ADV adviser records are Enterprise-only, so price that in before relying on it.
A developer building an earnings-summary feature
Pull a single 8-K item or 10-Q risk-factor section into a pipeline
Call extractor for Item 2.02 or the risk-factors section instead of get-edgar-file, which keeps each response to a section and well inside the context window.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Create a key at sec-api.io, add https://api.sec-api.io/mcp as an HTTP server with an Authorization header, and restart the client; it should report 49 tools. Stdio-only clients bridge with npx mcp-remote.
- Integrations
- Setup guides for 55 clients, including Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT developer mode, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code, Zed, LangChain and n8n. The same key works on the SEC-API.io REST API.
- Data and privacy
- Remote service; queries and the API key go to SEC-API.io, governed by its terms. Filing data is public. The key can sit in a header or the URL query string; the header keeps it out of logs.
- Cost at scale
- Personal & Startups $49/month with 50 GB bandwidth for teams under five; Business $199/month with 100 GB, internal use only; $0.30 per extra GB. Redistribution needs Enterprise, priced per agreement.
- Limits
- 50 rows per call on most tools, 10 on form-nport, 100 on full-text search; paging stops at 10,000; no response size cap. Rate limits run from 10 to 40 requests per second depending on API and plan.
