What is Rocinante X 12B?
Rocinante X 12B v1 is a role-play finetune of Mistral Nemo Instruct 2407, released on 19 January 2026 by TheDrummer, the independent finetuner behind Cydonia. It replaces Rocinante 12B v1.1 from 2024 and, in the author's words, focuses on role-play, prose and dialogue.
It is a 12-billion-parameter text model. The card recommends the Mistral v3 Tekken template without a system-prompt tag, or Metharme, and says it works with or without a thinking block. The base model was trained with a 128K-token context and is Apache 2.0; the finetune's card declares no licence of its own.
There is no hosted API: OpenRouter lists the older Rocinante 12B with no active provider.
Is Rocinante X 12B worth it?
Rocinante X 12B matters because it brings a dedicated role-play model to hardware most people own. At 12 billion parameters a 4-bit quant fits in well under 16 GB, and one tester quoted on the card ran it on a laptop with 16 GB of unified memory. Its GGUF repository logged 43,695 downloads in the last month and 138,039 in total, behind only its bigger sibling Cydonia among TheDrummer's models.
User reports on the card are consistent: better than other 12B models at staying in character, more coherent than its size suggests, and cheap enough on memory that people raise the context length instead of moving to a 24B model. One user ran more than 40 voice exchanges through it without the character slipping.
The catch: those reports are the whole case. There is no benchmark, no training-data description and no licence on the card. The same tester who praised it complained about stock AI phrasing such as "it's not just x, it's y". The base, Mistral Nemo, dates from July 2024, so its general knowledge and instruction following trail current small models such as Gemma 4. Testers also mention that it moves between safe and explicit scenes without friction, which suits private use and complicates any public app.
Our take: for a gaming laptop or a 16 GB card it is the obvious first download; for anything with users or customers, a model with a stated licence and a newer base, such as Equinox 31B, is the safer foundation.
Where it earns its place
A student with a 16 GB gaming laptop
Run private interactive fiction offline
Load a Q4 or Q5 GGUF in LM Studio or KoboldCpp with the Mistral v3 Tekken template; nothing leaves the laptop and there is no subscription.
A hobby developer building a voice companion
Keep a character consistent across a long spoken conversation on modest hardware
Pair the model with local speech-to-text and text-to-speech; one tester on the card reports 40-plus voice exchanges at Q8 without the character breaking.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Download bartowski's iMatrix GGUF (recommended on the card) and load it in llama.cpp, KoboldCpp or LM Studio; use Mistral v3 Tekken without [SYSTEM_PROMPT], or Metharme.
- Integrations
- SillyTavern and any front end that talks to a local llama.cpp or OpenAI-compatible server.
- Data and privacy
- Runs entirely on your machine. No licence declared on the card; the Mistral Nemo base is Apache 2.0.
- Limits
- No benchmarks; stock phrasing reported; older 2024 base; uncensored by design.
What’s good
- Runs on 16 GB of memory at 4-bit
- 43,695 GGUF downloads last month, a large user community
- 128K-token context from the Mistral Nemo base
- Users report it holds character over long chats
What’s not
- No licence, training data or benchmark published
- Base model dates from July 2024
- Users report stock AI phrasing
- No hosted API
Best for
Role-play hobbyists on a laptop or a 16 GB GPU who want a dedicated local model rather than a general chatbot.
