4.1/5

Seedream 5.0 Pro is a layout tool sold at flagship prices, and on raw image quality Google's cheaper Nano Banana 2.1 beats it.

What it is

Seedream 5.0 Pro was released by ByteDance's Seed team on July 8, 2026. It replaces Seedream 4.5 at the top of the Seedream family, alongside the cheaper Seedream 5.0 Lite from February 2026.

ByteDance's pitch is controllable production rather than prettier pictures. The model separates an image into a background and up to 20 element layers with PNG transparency, edits regions targeted by bounding boxes, points, arrows, coordinates or hex colour codes, renders text in 14 languages including Arabic, Thai and Korean, and takes up to 10 reference images. ByteDance says its text-to-image output feeds directly into Seedance 2.0 and 2.5 video generation.

It is available through the BytePlus ModelArk and Volcano Engine APIs, ByteDance's Lumina and Dreamina apps, and third-party hosts such as Runway. ByteDance has not published a technical report.

Our review

Seedream 5.0 Pro loses the blind vote and wins the edit pass. Artificial Analysis ranks it 16th on text-to-image at 1100 Elo, with a confidence range of 15th to 17th, and lists it at $90 per 1,000 images on ByteDance's API. Nano Banana 2.1 is fourth at 1176 for $33.60, so on picture quality per dollar the comparison is not close.

The argument for it is what happens after the first image. Layer separation into as many as 20 transparent elements means a designer can open the result in Photoshop or Figma and move the logo, rather than regenerating the whole frame to nudge it. Edits can target coordinates, marked regions or a hex code, which is how brand teams already specify changes. ByteDance's own guidance concedes the catch: if the base composition is unstable, local edits tend to move the problem elsewhere.

The 14-language text rendering is aimed at regional marketing, where a poster may need Arabic, Thai and Russian variants of the same layout. That is a real gap in many Western models, though ByteDance has published no benchmark for it and Artificial Analysis does not score text rendering separately.

Price depends heavily on the route. BytePlus advertises first-purchase packs from $0.045 an image, half the list rate Artificial Analysis cites, while Runway resells 1K images at $0.05 and 2K at $0.09. A team that mostly needs 1K drafts pays Runway close to the promotional rate without a BytePlus contract, which says something about how ByteDance's own pricing is pitched.

Where it earns its place

  • An in-house design team at a Southeast Asian consumer brand

Produce the same promotional poster in Thai, English and Arabic

Generate one layout, then regenerate the text layer per language and fix colours by hex code. 2,000 posters a month costs about $180 at Artificial Analysis's $90 per 1,000 list price, less on BytePlus packs.

  • A product designer who hands assets to a Figma-based web team

Get generated hero images with the product and background on separate layers

Request layer separation and export PNG layers with transparency, so developers can animate or reposition elements. Saves a manual masking pass per image; ByteDance says local edits work best once the base composition is settled.

  • A developer at an ad-tech startup already billing through Runway

Add a layout-aware image model without a second vendor contract

    Call seedream5_pro on Runway's API at 5 credits ($0.05) per 1K image or 9 credits ($0.09) per 2K. 20,000 1K images a month is about $1,000, against about $1,800 at ByteDance's list rate.

Before you commit

Setup
Create a BytePlus ModelArk or Volcano Engine account and enable the model in the console, or use it in Lumina and Dreamina without code; Runway exposes it as seedream5_pro.
Integrations
BytePlus ModelArk and Volcano Engine APIs, Lumina, Dreamina, Doubao and Jimeng apps, Runway's API; outputs chain into Seedance video generation.
Data and privacy
BytePlus's retention, training-use and certification terms for ModelArk image generation were not published on the pages we could reach; treat uploaded brand assets as leaving your control until you have them in writing.
Cost at scale
20,000 images a month is about $1,800 at Artificial Analysis's $90 per 1,000, about $900 at BytePlus's $0.045 first-purchase rate, and $1,000 (1K) to $1,800 (2K) on Runway. Extra reference images beyond the first cost from $0.003 each on BytePlus.
Limits
Up to 10 reference images; up to 20 layers; text in 14 languages; no published rate limits; local edits on an unstable base image tend to shift errors elsewhere, per ByteDance.

What's good

  • Splits images into a background plus up to 20 transparent layers
  • Edits by bounding box, coordinates, arrows or hex colour codes
  • Text rendering in 14 languages, including Arabic, Thai and Korean
  • Up to 10 reference images per request

What's not

  • 16th on Artificial Analysis's text-to-image board at 1100 Elo
  • $90 per 1,000 images list, against $33.60 for the higher-ranked Nano Banana 2.1
  • No technical report and no published text-rendering benchmark
  • API retention and training terms not published on the pages we reached

Best for

Design and marketing teams who need layered, editable outputs and multilingual text more than top blind-vote quality.
