3.6/5

Free and already inside your messaging apps, but your chats now feed Meta's ad targeting, which makes it a convenience tool rather than a place for anything personal.

What it is

Meta AI is the free chat assistant built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, with its own app and a website at meta.ai. It answers questions, rewrites messages and makes images inside apps people already use, and Meta said in October 2025 that more than 1 billion people use it every month.

It runs on Muse Spark, the first model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, introduced in April 2026. In September 2026 Meta launched Muse, a separate US-only agent app that books travel, sends email and buys things for you. Muse is free for basic use; CNBC reports $20 and $100 monthly plans that give access to Meta's stronger Muse Wonder model, released on 12 October 2026.

Since 16 December 2025 Meta has used conversations with Meta AI to personalise content and ads across its apps in most regions, excluding sensitive topics such as health and religion.

Our review

Meta AI's advantage is distribution, and the price is your data. It sits in WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook with nothing to install, and Meta counts more than a billion monthly users. Since 16 December 2025 those conversations have also shaped the posts, reels and ads people see, in most regions, and Meta's help centre says interactions are used to improve its AI. Meta AI has no paid or business tier, so there is no plan with different terms.

Meta does carve out some subjects. Its October 2025 announcement says conversations about religious or political views, sexual orientation, health, ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership are not used to show ads. Everything else can be, and the help centre adds that when Meta AI cannot answer, your messages and general details such as your region may go to "select partners".

The model has improved. Meta AI now runs on Muse Spark from Meta Superintelligence Labs, a step up from the Llama models it used before. Meta's strongest model, Muse Wonder, is held back for paying Muse subscribers on $20 or $100 plans and for developers on the Meta Model API, which Meta's AI chief Alexandr Wang told CNBC will cost more than the subscriptions.

Muse, the separate agent app, shows the contrast. Each user runs in an isolated cloud machine, a second agent called Sentinel must approve anything sent to the internet, users can opt out of training, and Meta says Muse does not share conversations with its ad systems. Amazon has already blocked the agent from its site, according to NPR. That the paid agent gets firmer privacy promises than the free assistant tells you which product Meta expects people to trust with sensitive tasks.

Where it earns its place

  • A WhatsApp user planning a family trip in a group chat

Get quick answers and a draft itinerary without leaving the chat

Mention Meta AI in the group to compare options or rewrite a message, at no cost. Anything typed can be used to personalise ads unless it falls in Meta's excluded sensitive categories, so keep passport and health details out.

  • A café owner who runs the shop's Instagram account

Draft captions and promotional images quickly

Meta AI inside Instagram drafts captions and images for free. There is no business account, admin console or data processing agreement, so any customer details pasted in fall under Meta's consumer terms.

  • A developer evaluating Meta's models for an agent product

Decide between the free assistant and paid model access

The free assistant only exposes Muse Spark; Muse Wonder comes through the paid Meta Model API, which Meta says will cost more than the $20 and $100 Muse plans but sit below leading OpenAI and Anthropic models. Per-token prices were not published at launch.
