What it is
Napkin AI turns text into business visuals. You paste or import a passage, and it suggests diagrams, flowcharts, mind maps, infographics or charts that fit the content, without a prompt. The results are editable shapes, so colours, fonts, icons, layouts and labels can all be changed. Napkin Slides, still in beta, builds a full presentation.
It imports PPT, DOC, PDF, HTML and Markdown and exports PNG and PDF on every plan, with PowerPoint and SVG on paid plans. Visuals work in more than 60 languages, and Teamspaces allow shared editing. A REST API, available on every plan including Free, takes text and returns SVG, PNG or PPT in one of 21 built-in styles or your own brand style.
Credits are charged at roughly one per selected word. Free gives 500 a week; Plus ($12 a month, or $9 billed yearly) gives 10,000 a month, and Pro ($30, or $22 yearly) 30,000. Each member who joins a paid Teamspace is billed as a seat.
Our review
Napkin solves a narrow problem well. A consultant, product manager or teacher with an idea in prose can get several diagram options in seconds, and because the output is editable vector shapes rather than a generated image, the labels are spelled correctly and the layout can be fixed by hand. General image models still scramble text in diagrams; Napkin sidesteps that by not generating pixels at all.
The credit model rewards short inputs. At roughly one credit per selected word, the free 500 a week covers a few dozen visuals from short passages, while Plus's 10,000 a month is enough for a heavy individual user. Credits are spent on the words you select, so turning a 400-word section into one diagram costs about as much as 40 small ones. Pro adds custom fonts, unlimited brand styles and top-ups for when credits run out mid-project.
The data terms deserve a look before a team pastes in client material. Napkin's pricing FAQ says it will not use your data to train its models "if you opt out of data sharing", which means the default is the reverse. Its AI subprocessors are contractually barred from training on customer data. Napkin publishes a Trust Center, but SSO and security terms for Enterprise are not described on the public pages.
The API is the underrated part. Every plan, Free included, can create a token in the app and call it with no waitlist; rate limits rise with the plan, and output comes back as SVG, PNG or PPT. It accepts text only, not files, and there is no official MCP server, though Make and n8n connectors exist. Gamma remains the more mature tool for whole decks, which leaves Napkin strongest as the diagram layer inside someone else's product or document.
Where it earns its place
A management consultant writing a 30-page client report
Turn key sections into clean process and framework diagrams
Select a paragraph, pick from Napkin's suggestions and adjust labels and colours, then export to PowerPoint. Plus at $12 a month covers 10,000 words of selected text; opt out of data sharing before pasting client material.
A developer at an edtech start-up building a study app
Generate a diagram for each lesson summary automatically
Create an API token in Account Settings, send lesson text with a style ID and fetch SVG back. Credits and rate limits follow the account's plan, so a Pro account's 30,000 credits a month covers roughly 30,000 words of lesson text; requests return a no_credits error when the balance is empty.
A product marketing manager at a 50-person SaaS company
Keep blog and docs diagrams on brand across a team of four writers
A Plus Teamspace with three brand styles costs four seats at $9 a month on yearly billing, $432 a year; Pro at $22 a seat adds unlimited brand styles and the company's own fonts.
