4.6/5

Canva remains the default design tool for people who are not designers, but its AI is now rationed and heavy use has become a real line item.

What it is

Canva is the Australian design platform used by more than 265 million people a month, according to figures reported at the end of 2025. It covers social graphics, presentations, documents, websites, whiteboards, video, print and spreadsheets (Canva Sheets), built around templates and brand kits.

Its AI tools range from background removal, resizing and translation to Canva's own design model (October 2025), which generates layouts where every layer can be edited. Canva AI 2.0 arrived as a research preview in April 2026 with agent-style tools that run repeated design tasks in the background, and on 22 October 2026 Canva released Canva Craft, its first in-house image model, trained on its own template library. Magic Layers turns a flat image into editable layers. Canva also owns Leonardo.Ai, the Affinity design apps (whose base version became free in October 2025) and the Cavalry animation tool.

AI use is metered. Standard AI tools are unlimited on paid plans, while Premium and Ultra tools draw on a monthly allowance: up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses on Pro, and 400 or 40 on Business. In August 2026 Canva cut its revenue growth forecast for the year from 30% to 20%, citing the cost of serving AI features.

Our review

Canva's case is breadth with almost no training. One account covers social posts, decks, documents, short video, websites, print and spreadsheets, with brand kits that hold a company's logos, fonts and colours, and more than 265 million people used it each month at the end of 2025. For a marketing team without a full-time designer, nothing else covers as much of the weekly workload.

The price is now a two-part decision. Pro costs US$144 a year for one person and Business US$250 per person a year with no seat minimum, but the AI that sells the product is metered on top. Pro includes up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses a month and Business 400 or 40, and Canva's help centre calls those best-case figures that complex tasks burn faster. Conversational design in Canva AI 2.0 is an Ultra tool. The AI Pass add-on that lifts the ceiling costs US$100 per person a month, more than eight months of Pro billed annually.

The rationing has a business reason. In August 2026 Canva cut its revenue growth forecast for the year from 30% to 20% because AI serving costs ran ahead of plan, and it is shifting work to cheaper in-house models. Canva Craft, released on 22 October and trained on Canva's own templates rather than photographs, is the first image model of its own. Buyers should expect allowances and prices to keep moving while that shift plays out.

For IT the line between Business and Enterprise is sharp. SSO, SCIM, audit logs and data residency are Enterprise-only, and Canva Shield's AI output indemnity needs at least 100 contracted seats. On training, Canva's trust centre says content from Teams, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts is not used to improve its AI and the setting cannot be switched on; Free and Pro users control it themselves in privacy settings, and the current privacy policy says Canva may analyse content in their accounts to train its AI.

Specialists still win their own ground. Gamma builds a whole deck from a prompt faster, Figma is the tool for product and interface design, and Adobe's apps remain the standard for professional print and photo work. Canva's real territory is the unglamorous middle of marketing: the twentieth resized social post, and the locked brand template a sales rep cannot break.

Where it earns its place

  • A three-person marketing team at a regional dental group

Produce weekly social posts and print flyers on brand

Business at US$250 per person a year (US$750 in total) gives shared brand kits and templates; Standard tools such as Translate and Magic Write do not draw on the AI allowance, so routine work rarely hits a cap.

  • The IT manager at a 300-person company

Roll out Canva with single sign-on and automatic offboarding

Business has no SSO or SCIM, so this means Enterprise at a negotiated price; at 100 or more contracted seats Canva Shield adds AI output indemnity and a dedicated customer success manager. SSO needs a SAML 2.0 identity provider and a DNS TXT record.

  • A freelance social media manager with four retainer clients

Generate AI images and short video clips every week

Pro's 20 Ultra uses a month run out quickly on video; AI Pass at US$100 a month raises the allowance 40-fold, so the question is whether the retainers cover a bill more than five times Pro's US$18 monthly price.

Before you commit

Setup
Sign up in a browser and start from a template in minutes; a brand kit is set up once by uploading logos, fonts and colours.
Integrations
Canva connects to ChatGPT and Gemini through its MCP integration, and Canva says Canva Craft is coming to the Canva API; Leonardo.Ai and the Affinity apps sit in the same company.
Data and privacy
SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 per Canva's trust centre; Teams, Business, Enterprise and Education content is excluded from AI training and cannot be opted in; Free and Pro users manage it in privacy settings.
Cost at scale
A 20-person team on Business costs US$5,000 a year; giving five heavy users AI Pass adds US$500 a month, or US$6,000 a year, more than the whole seat bill.
Limits
AI allowances are best-case estimates that complex tasks use faster; at the cap, paid plans keep Premium tools with short pauses, but Ultra tools stop until the monthly reset.
