What is Zencoder?
Zencoder makes Zenflow, a desktop app that runs coding agents through fixed workflows: one agent writes a specification, another plans the steps, another writes the code, and a model from a different company reviews it, so Claude can check work written by an OpenAI model and the other way round. Agents run side by side in separate sandboxes, and you watch them from one screen. The same agents are available as plugins for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs; the VS Code extension has about 160,000 installs and was last updated on 30 October 2026.
In April 2026 Zencoder added Zenflow Work, which points the same machinery at release notes, stand-up briefs, sales proposals and other office jobs, and lets you start and follow tasks from Slack or Telegram. The company is led by Andrew Filev, who founded and sold the project management firm Wrike, and says it holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certificates.
How much does Zencoder cost?
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $45/user/month ($40 annual) | 30,000 credits a month; 7-day trial with 5,000 credits |
| Pro Plus | $95/user/month ($85 annual) | 80,000 credits; shared team pool, multi-repo indexing, SSO and audit logs |
| Pro Max | $195/user/month ($175 annual) | 180,000 credits; priority support |
| Enterprise | Custom | Prepaid usage, private deployment, dedicated success manager |
Per user per month: Pro $45 ($40 billed annually) with 30,000 credits; Pro Plus $95 ($85) with 80,000 credits, shared team pool, SSO and audit logs; Pro Max $195 ($175) with 180,000 credits and priority support; Enterprise custom with private deployment. 7-day trial capped at 5,000 credits. Top-ups from $20, non-refundable. Bring-your-own OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini keys use no credits.
Is Zencoder worth it?
Ask an AI to build a feature in one go and it tends to drift: by the fifth file it has forgotten what you asked for in the first. Most of the fixes people use are habits, like writing a plan first and asking a second model to check the work.
Zencoder turns those habits into the product. In Zenflow, every task starts with a written specification, then a step-by-step plan, then code, and a model from a different company reviews the result. Zencoder says its own tests found this cross-checking made code about 20% more correct on average, and that using Claude Opus to plan and Gemini Flash to write the code was 2.7 times cheaper per finished task on a hard set of SWE-bench Pro problems. Both are the company's figures, not independent ones.
It also goes further than most coding tools into the rest of the job. Zenflow Work, added in April, writes release notes and stand-up briefs from your Jira, Linear and Notion activity and takes instructions from Slack or Telegram. Zencoder's line is that coding is about a quarter of an engineer's day and this is for the other 75%.
The catch: you pay by the credit, and Zencoder does not say what a credit buys. Every model call costs "a number of credits based on the model and the work involved", Pro's 30,000 credits reset monthly and do not roll over, and top-ups start at $20 and cannot be refunded. At $45 a month, or $40 billed yearly, Pro already costs more than Cursor's $30 Premium seat, and SSO waits until the $95 Pro Plus tier. You can bring your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini key to avoid credits entirely, but you still pay the seat. Its changelogs for both Zenflow and the IDE plugins stop at August 2026 in public, although the VS Code extension itself was updated on 30 October.
On security the paperwork is good. Zencoder's docs list SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, say your code is never used to train or fine-tune any model, and say code context is processed and not kept unless you switch persistence on. Enterprise adds private deployment.
Our take: Zenflow is a disciplined way of working sold as software. If your team already writes specs and asks a second model to review, you can do that in Claude Code or Cursor for less; if it does not, Zenflow is the tool that makes it a rule, and that is what you are paying the extra for.
Where it earns its place
A tech lead at a 20-person agency building client apps
Stop agents drifting away from what the client actually signed off
Each task in Zenflow begins with a specification that the agent works from and a second model checks against. Pro Plus at $85 a seat billed yearly gives a shared credit pool and SSO; for 20 people that is $1,700 a month before top-ups.
A developer who already pays for Anthropic and OpenAI APIs
Get cross-model review without paying for model use twice
Add both keys under bring-your-own-key and Zenflow's calls draw on your own accounts instead of credits. The Pro seat at $40 a month billed yearly still applies.
An engineering manager at a fintech
Write release notes and stakeholder updates without losing half a day
Zenflow Work drafts release notes from your tickets and repository and posts to Slack; Zencoder says this cuts the job from half a day to 10 minutes of review. SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certificates help with vendor approval.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Download Zenflow for the desktop or install the VS Code or JetBrains plugin, sign in and start the 7-day trial, which ends after 7 days or 5,000 credits, whichever comes first.
- Integrations
- VS Code and JetBrains IDEs; OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models; Jira, Linear, Notion, Gmail, Slack, Telegram and Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Calendar; remote MCP servers with OAuth.
- Data and privacy
- Zencoder's docs say your code is never used to train or fine-tune any AI model and code context is processed ephemerally unless persistence is enabled; SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001; private deployment on Enterprise. Which AI tools train on your data?
- Cost at scale
- A 50-person team on Pro Plus pays $4,250 a month billed yearly for 80,000 credits each, plus any top-ups; what those credits buy in tasks is not published.
- Limits
- Credit cost per call varies by model and task and is not published; plan credits expire monthly; on paid plans admins can cap each user's share of the pool.
What’s good
- Every task runs spec, plan, code and cross-model review in order
- Agents run in parallel in separate sandboxes, watched from one screen
- Bring your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini key with no credit use
- SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001; no training on customer code
- Zenflow Work extends the same workflows to release notes, briefs and Slack
What’s not
- Credits have no published conversion into tasks or tokens
- Pro at $45/month costs more than Cursor's $30 Premium seat
- SSO and audit logs start at $95 per seat
- Unused credits expire monthly; top-ups are non-refundable
- Public changelogs last updated in August 2026
Best for
Engineering teams that want spec-first, cross-checked agent work enforced by the tool rather than by team habit, and can afford a premium seat.
