Bolt.new vs v0

v0 is the better builder for React developers who deploy on Vercel and want polished front ends with Git built in; Bolt suits developers who want a quick, editable full-stack prototype in the browser and can live with token billing.

Main drawbackCosts hard to predict on long projectsStrongly tied to React, Next.js and Vercel

The deeper difference is focus. v0 commits to React, Next.js and Vercel and produces front ends reviewers rate highly, while Bolt runs what it writes live in your browser and hosts it with a database attached. Both bill by consumption, but Bolt's token use grows with project size and its users complain loudly about the cost.

Both turn a chat prompt into a running web app, but they make different bets. v0 is built around one stack, React and Next.js on Vercel, and that focus shows in polished front-end output and in Design Mode, which adjusts spacing, colours and text without a prompt. Bolt's bet is immediacy: the code runs inside your browser on StackBlitz's environment, so you see the result as soon as it is written and can open and edit the files yourself.

v0 has moved further towards real software projects. According to Vercel's blog, its February 2026 rebuild added GitHub repo import, a Git panel with one branch per chat and pull requests, and database connections, with new apps defaulting to Neon and Better Auth. The v0 API, generally available since August 2026, lets other tools and agents use the builder. Bolt's 2026 push went to business buyers instead: a May Microsoft partnership added Azure Marketplace purchasing and Teams and Copilot integration, and its Teams plan adds private NPM registries and shared design-system rules.

Cost is where Bolt struggles. Every prompt and fix uses tokens, and larger projects use more per request because the AI has to read more code. Pro starts at $25 for 10M tokens a month, with unused tokens rolling over for one month, and team members do not share a token pool. Trustpilot reviewers gave Bolt 1.5 out of 5 from 202 reviews as of September 2026, mostly over tokens spent on errors the AI itself introduced. v0's credits are easier to read, at $30 of monthly credits plus $2 a day on the $30 Plus plan, though model choice affects how fast they go.

v0's weaknesses are narrower but real. Teams on other frameworks get less out of it, Business at $100 per user adds little beyond training opt-out, and the free plan's 7 messages a day is enough to try it, not to build with it. Bolt's free tier goes further. For a throwaway prototype, Bolt is quicker to a public URL; for something you intend to maintain in Git, v0 gives more structure.
