Our rating

4.2/5

A well-documented way to have an assistant draft, edit and export real Canva files, rationed by per-minute limits that suit a person far better than a pipeline.

What it is

Canva runs a remote MCP server at https://mcp.canva.com/mcp over Streamable HTTP, with each user signing in to their own Canva account through OAuth. It powers Canva's AI Connector in assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT, and developers building their own assistant register an app in Canva's Developer Portal to get a client ID and secret.

The documentation lists 46 tools covering designs (search-designs, get-design-content, generate-design, create-design, copy-design, merge-designs), editing transactions, comments, folders, asset uploads, image tools (generate-image, remove-background, separate-image-layers) and export-design to formats such as PDF, PNG, JPG, PPTX and MP4. Each tool has its own rate limit, from 10 to 100 requests a minute, under a cap of 300 a minute per user across all their clients.

Nine tools need Canva Pro or above: autofill, brand templates, brand kits and resize-design. Free accounts get standard-quality exports. A separate Canva Dev MCP server (npx -y @canva/cli@latest mcp) helps developers build Canva apps and does not touch your designs.

Our review

Canva's server is aimed at non-designers who want an assistant to produce social posts, slides or flyers and then adjust them by asking. It generates designs, edits them through editing transactions (start, perform, commit), searches your existing work and exports in the formats people actually need, including PPTX and MP4. The output is an ordinary Canva design you can open and fix by hand, which matters more than any single feature.

The documentation is better than most vendors'. Every tool has a published rate limit and plan requirement: 37 of the 46 work on the free plan, while brand kits, brand templates, autofill and resize need Pro or above. generate-design can take up to 60 seconds, and Canva tells integrators to raise their timeouts accordingly.

The limits rule out bulk production. generate-design, export-design, copy-design and the editing-transaction tools are capped at 20 requests a minute and generate-image at 10, under a 300-a-minute ceiling per user across every client they use. There are no service accounts: Canva requires each person to authenticate individually, so a marketing team cannot run one shared agent against a team brand kit on a single login. Canva's usage policy also bars integrators from using Canva data, prompts or brand kits to train external models.

The security model is straightforward because Canva already holds the data; the agent can only reach designs the signed-in user can. The exposure is the usual one for shared content: get-design-content and list-comments read text that colleagues or outside collaborators wrote, which an agent may treat as instructions. Figma's server is the better fit for product design and design-to-code; for marketing collateral, Canva's gets to a finished file faster.

Where it earns its place

  • A two-person marketing team at a local gym chain on Canva Pro

Turn a weekly class timetable into Instagram posts and a print flyer

Ask Claude with the Canva connector to autofill the brand template from the timetable, resize it for stories, and export PNG and PDF. Autofill and resize need Pro; at 20 exports a minute the weekly batch finishes in a few minutes.

  • A sales engineer preparing customer decks

Draft a first-cut pitch deck in Canva from a call summary

generate-design produces candidates from a prompt, create-design-from-candidate saves one, and export-design returns a PPTX. It works on the free plan, but generation can take up to 60 seconds per call.

  • A developer building an internal assistant for a 200-person company

Let staff search and export their own Canva designs from the company chat tool

Register an app in the Developer Portal for OAuth credentials; each employee then connects their own Canva account, since organisation-level auth is not supported. Per-user limits of 300 requests a minute apply across clients.

Before you commit

Setup
In Claude or ChatGPT, enable the Canva connector and sign in; in Claude Code, claude mcp add --transport http canva https://mcp.canva.com/mcp, then OAuth on first use. Builders of their own assistants create an app in the Developer Portal first. Clients must allow both canva.com and canva.ai domains.
Integrations
46 tools across designs, editing transactions, comments, folders, assets, images, brand templates and export. Most are write-capable (create, edit, comment, move, upload); read tools include search-designs, get-design-content and list-comments.
Data and privacy
Hosted by Canva, which already stores the designs; the agent sees only what the signed-in user can access. Canva's MCP usage policy forbids integrators from training external models on Canva data or retaining it beyond operational need. Shared designs and comments are untrusted text the agent will read.
Cost at scale
The server is free; costs are Canva seats, with Business at US$250 per person a year, and generation tools draw on Canva's AI credit model. The real ceiling is throughput: 20 designs or exports a minute per user.
Limits
Per-tool limits of 10 to 100 requests a minute and 300 per user overall; generate-design can take 60 seconds. No organisation-level or service-account auth. Exports can fail on premium elements, and free accounts get standard-quality output.

  • 20 requests a minute on generation and export
  • No service accounts; every user signs in separately
  • Free-plan exports are standard quality only
