What is PlaceCall?
PlaceCall, from Voygr, gives an agent a phone. You pass a US number (or a description such as 'a romantic restaurant in Chicago, Saturday 8pm') and a plain-English brief; a voice bot dials, works through phone menus and hold queues, talks to the business and returns a labelled outcome, the full transcript and the recording. Failed calls come back with a reason: dropped, busy, voicemail or wrong number. It was called Callwright until August 2026.
The MCP server is hosted at https://api.voygr.tech/mcp over streamable HTTP and is listed in the official MCP Registry as io.github.voygr-tech/placecall. It exposes four tools (suggest_places, place_call, get_call_result, answer_question) and signs you in with OAuth, or takes an API key in an X-API-Key header. The GitHub repository (MIT, about 110 stars) holds the skill and plugins for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI; the calling service itself is closed and paid.
How to install PlaceCall
https://api.voygr.tech/mcpIs PlaceCall worth it?
PlaceCall does something most MCP servers cannot: it takes the last task an agent has to hand back to a person, ringing a business that has no booking page or API, and does it end to end. The bot reads only the brief, so the quality of the call depends on how completely the agent writes it: names, dates, party size, a callback number and how to wrap up. When the business asks something the brief did not cover, answer_question lets the bot raise it mid-call and the agent reply.
The pricing is easy to reason about. A call that obtains something, an answer, a refusal or a booking, costs 10 credits; one that hits voicemail or a busy line costs nothing. The $100 pack buys 10,000 credits, so roughly 1,000 useful calls, and the $1,000 pack adds a 5% bonus. A running call holds 30 credits until it ends, so a balance can return a 402 error while it would still cover the charge itself, a detail that matters for agents placing calls in parallel.
The constraints are legal and geographic rather than technical. Calls go to US numbers only, and not to Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana or Nebraska. Every call rings a real phone and is recorded by default, opening with a notice that the line is recorded; key holders can change or switch off that notice, which puts the compliance judgement on you. Recordings and transcripts are kept for 90 days on Voygr's side.
English is the reliable language. Thirteen language codes are accepted, but the docs call anything other than English best-effort, and the default 'auto' setting runs the call in English. Results also arrive in stages: the outcome can land a moment after the status reads completed, and the final transcript a minute or two later, so an agent has to poll get_call_result rather than trust the first reply.
The nearest comparison is building the same thing yourself on a telephony provider and a voice model, which means owning hold detection, IVR navigation and outcome labelling. For a team that needs a few hundred calls a month, ten cents a useful call is far cheaper than that engineering, and the cost of a wasted call is zero.
Where it earns its place
An executive assistant at a 30-person firm booking team dinners and venues
Find a restaurant that can seat twelve on Thursday and book it
Ask the agent; suggest_places proposes candidates and writes the brief, place_call rings them in turn, and the transcript shows who said yes. At about $0.10 per answered call, ringing five restaurants costs around 50 cents.
A procurement analyst at a regional contractor
Collect quotes for a dumpster rental from a dozen local suppliers
Pass the list of numbers with one brief, let the calls run in parallel and compare the labelled outcomes. Busy lines and voicemail are free, so only the dozen or so useful calls are billed, roughly $1.20.
A developer building a concierge feature into a travel app
Confirm late check-in with small hotels that do not answer email
Call the hosted server with an API key, poll get_call_result until outcome_type is set, and store the transcript for support. The 90-day retention on Voygr's side needs to appear in the app's privacy notice.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Add https://api.voygr.tech/mcp as a custom connector in claude.ai or ChatGPT, or install the Claude Code plugin with /plugin marketplace add voygr-tech/placecall, then sign in through the browser; the first sign-in creates an account with 2,500 free credits.
- Integrations
- Four tools: suggest_places, place_call, get_call_result and answer_question. A REST API covers the same calls plus cancel, listing and recordings, and an Apify Actor calls a whole list at $0.10 per connected call.
- Data and privacy
- The server receives the number, brief, language and any callback details you give it. Calls are recorded by default and recordings and transcripts are kept for 90 days; the bot opens with a recording notice unless a key holder changes it. Transcripts carry whatever the business says back, so treat them as untrusted input.
- Cost at scale
- Ten credits per useful call: the $100 pack covers about 1,000 calls and the $1,000 pack 10,500, since it includes 105,000 credits. Place suggestions cost 5 credits each from the same balance.
- Limits
- US destinations only, not IN, LA, MN, MT or NE. Thirteen languages accepted, English the only reliable one. Switching off recording, changing the notice, cancelling and listing calls need an API key rather than OAuth.
What’s good
- Navigates phone menus and hold queues, not just a dial-out
- Pay only for calls that reach a conversation
- OAuth sign-in through claude.ai, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex and Cursor
- Returns outcome label, transcript and recording
What’s not
- US numbers only, excluding five states
- Non-English calls are best-effort
- Recordings and transcripts kept 90 days by Voygr
- Closed hosted service; the repo holds only the skill and plugins
Best for
Agents that need to book, confirm or get quotes from US businesses reachable only by phone.
