Genie 4

DeepMind's real-time world model with native sound and live text steering; impressive, and still closed to almost everyone.

3.6/5

Genie 4 shows where interactive world models are going, but with no price, no API and two-minute scenes, it is a preview to watch rather than a model to build on.

What is Genie 4?

Genie 4 is Google DeepMind's fourth world model, announced on 27 October 2026. It generates an explorable scene frame by frame in real time from a text or image prompt, responding to keyboard movement and camera controls, and for the first time it generates audio with the world: music, ambient sound and spoken dialogue.

Users can type prompts mid-session to change the weather, move the camera or add a person or object, and Gemini models plan and monitor the scene between inputs to keep it coherent. DeepMind says it keeps a scene consistent for up to two minutes, double Genie 3, with better physics and more humanlike characters. All video and audio carries a SynthID watermark.

It is a research preview for trusted testers. DeepMind says it will reach Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie, the consumer app that today runs Genie 3, and early access partners of the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. No price or date has been announced.

Is Genie 4 worth it?

Genie 4 is the most capable real-time world model a big lab has shown, and almost no one outside Google can use it. The 27 October announcement opened it to trusted testers only, with a waitlist for Project Genie and an unspecified early access programme on the Gemini API.

The advances over Genie 3 are real. Scenes now come with generated sound, including dialogue from characters in the world. DeepMind says consistency holds for up to two minutes, twice Genie 3's limit, and that physics such as collisions and aerodynamics improved. The most useful change is live steering: typing a prompt mid-session to change the weather or add a person, with Gemini rewriting the prompt to fit the scene and monitoring it between inputs.

The limits are the ones DeepMind and TechCrunch both describe. Details and objects drift as a session runs longer or after several edits, audio is not always accurate, and in-world text is not reliably legible. Project Genie, the consumer route, has capped Genie 3 sessions at 60 seconds at 720p and 24 frames per second, and Google has not said whether Genie 4 changes that.

Nothing comes out as a game. Genie generates video in response to input; there is no exported level, no code and no 3D asset. Tencent's open HY-World 2.0 writes out a reusable 3D scene, and Skywork's Matrix-Game 4.0 ships weights under Apache 2.0, which makes both more practical for a studio today.

The current route in is a Google AI Ultra plan at $99.99 a month for Project Genie, which still runs Genie 3. DeepMind says testers go from an idea to an explorable prototype in seconds, which suits pitching a mood or a camera move; for anything a team must ship, it is not yet a tool.

Where it earns its place

  • A game designer at a mid-sized studio pitching a new title

Show producers what a level feels like before engine work starts

DeepMind says trusted testers go from idea to an explorable prototype in seconds; until access opens, the realistic route is Project Genie on Genie 3 through Google AI Ultra at $99.99 a month, with 60-second sessions.

  • A robotics research team

Rehearse robot task scenarios in simulated environments

DeepMind paired Genie 4 with Gemini 4 Argon to break tasks into steps it then simulated; outside Google this needs early access, and drift over long sessions limits how far a simulated run can be trusted.

  • A film director in pre-production

Block out camera angles and lighting for a scene

Trusted testers use it to run several takes in real time and change camera, light and dialogue by prompt; output is a video reference, not a production asset.

Before you commit

Setup
Join the Genie 4 waitlist in Project Genie, which needs a Google AI Ultra subscription; API access is limited to early access partners.
Integrations
Project Genie web app, with Gemini API and Google AI Studio access promised for early access partners; Gemini models steer the scene during a session.
Data and privacy
Not published for Genie 4; Project Genie falls under Google's consumer Gemini terms.
Cost at scale
No API or per-session price has been announced.
Limits
Scene consistency up to two minutes; drift in longer sessions and after many edits; in-world text not reliably legible; video output only.

What’s good

  • Native audio, including dialogue, generated with the world
  • Scenes stay consistent for up to two minutes, double Genie 3
  • Live text steering mid-session, guided by Gemini
  • SynthID watermark on all video and audio

What’s not

  • Trusted testers only; no price, API date or self-serve access
  • Objects and details still drift in longer sessions
  • Outputs video only, with no exportable level, code or 3D asset
  • Closed weights; open rivals can be run and modified locally

Best for

Research groups and studios already in Google's trusted tester or early access programmes who want to prototype interactive scenes with sound.
