What it is
Midjourney V8 is the company's eighth image model family. V8 arrived as an alpha on 17 March 2026, V8.1 replaced V7 as the default on 11 June, and V8.2 followed on 24 July with a focus on aesthetics and personalisation; an instruction-based V8.2 edit model opened to everyone on 27 August. It runs only in Midjourney's web app and Discord bot. There is no public API.
According to Midjourney's posts, V8.1 shows standard images in about 4 seconds and HD images, rendered natively at 2K, in about 12. The V8.2 editor takes plain-language instructions, up to four reference images, inpainting and outpainting. An experimental Thinking Mode, in testing on the alpha site since 8 October 2026, reruns a job after checking where the image missed the prompt.
Our review
Midjourney V8 is the image model to choose when the look matters more than the plumbing. The V8 line was rebuilt around prompt adherence and text, V7's weak spots: Midjourney says V8 follows detailed directions better and renders quoted text more reliably, and Thinking Mode, still in alpha, targets errors in typography, layout and anatomy. None of this has been measured independently. With no API, Midjourney does not appear on Artificial Analysis or similar arenas.
Speed is where the change is easiest to verify from Midjourney's own posts. V8 launched about five times faster than V7, and V8.1 made HD rendering three times faster and cheaper, enough to make 2K output the default. Draft mode returns 24 low-resolution images for half the Fast time of one standard V8.1 job, which suits quick passes through style space.
For a business, the terms matter more than the model. Images are public and remixable by default, and only Pro and Mega include Stealth Mode. Every user grants Midjourney a perpetual, irrevocable licence to prompts and outputs. Companies with more than $1 million in annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega to own their images. The terms also forbid automated tools, so there is no sanctioned way to put Midjourney inside a pipeline, and the shared folders added in October leave non-stealth images visible on Explore.
Against GPT Image 2.5 or Ideogram, the comparison is about access more than quality. Those models sit behind APIs with per-image prices and public leaderboard results; Midjourney sells GPU hours to individual seats, one person per account, with no team tier in its plan table. For an illustrator that is simpler. For a product team it means $60 a seat for privacy and every render still done by hand.
Where it earns its place
A freelance illustrator pitching book-cover concepts
Explore dozens of styles before a client call
Draft mode returns 24 low-resolution images per job for half the Fast time of one standard V8.1 job, and style references keep a client's look consistent. Standard at $30 a month adds unlimited Relax generation, but images are public, so unreleased covers need Pro at $60.
A 10-person brand team at a company with over $1M in revenue
Produce campaign imagery that does not appear in a public gallery
The terms require Pro or Mega for companies of that size to own outputs, and Stealth is Pro and Mega only: 10 Pro seats cost $600 a month, or $5,760 a year billed annually. Each seat is one user; the plan table lists no team administration.
A developer building an e-commerce product-image pipeline
Generate thousands of images from a catalogue feed
Not a fit. The terms prohibit automated tools and there is no API, so scripted access risks a ban. An API model such as GPT Image 2.5 does the bulk work; Midjourney can only serve as a manual mood-board step before it.
Before you commit
- Setup
- Subscribe at midjourney.com; the plan table lists only paid tiers. New V8 features land on alpha.midjourney.com before the main site.
- Integrations
- Web app and Discord bot only. No public API, and the terms forbid automated tools, so there are no supported SDKs or plug-ins.
- Data and privacy
- Prompts and images are public and remixable by default; Stealth Mode (Pro and Mega) keeps them private, and shared folders do not change that. Users grant Midjourney a perpetual, irrevocable licence to inputs and outputs.

- Fast GPU time is 3.3 hours (Basic), 15 (Standard), 30 (Pro) or 60 (Mega) a month, with more at $4 an hour. A 10-seat Pro team pays $600 a month, or $5,760 a year on annual billing.
- Limits
- Basic allows 3 concurrent Fast jobs and Pro and Mega 12; queues cap at 10 jobs. Relax speed can drop when servers are short. Alpha versions can be withdrawn at short notice: V8.0 was retired two weeks after V8.1 became the default.
