Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image)

Google's premium image model: four times the price of Nano Banana 2.1, but still the one reviewers trust for realism.

4.2/5

Still Google's realism specialist, though blind voters and Google's own tests now prefer a model that costs a quarter as much.

What it is

Nano Banana Pro is the marketing name for Gemini 3 Pro Image (model ID gemini-3-pro-image), released in November 2025 and still listed as stable. It is Google's premium image generation and editing model; Google now calls the cheaper Nano Banana 2.1 its more efficient counterpart.

It outputs 1K, 2K or 4K images, accepts up to 14 reference images (by Google's table, 6 objects, 5 characters and 3 style images) and can ground prompts in Google web search. Thinking is always on: the model drafts up to two unbilled images before the final one. Every image carries a SynthID watermark. It is available in the Gemini API, Google AI Studio and the Gemini app.

Our review

Nano Banana Pro is now the expensive option in Google's line-up rather than its default. On Artificial Analysis's text-to-image board it sits 11th with an Elo of 1118, statistically tied with the models around it, while Nano Banana 2.1 is 4th at 1176 for $33.60 per 1,000 images against Pro's $134. Google's own benchmarks for 2.1 go further: Overall Preference of 1050 against 935 for Pro, and infographic accuracy of 0.521 against 0.265.

Reviews written from actual outputs disagree with the scoreboards. The Decoder's October comparison found Pro's colours and proportions more natural on its test prompt, with 2.1 shrinking a horse into something closer to a pony, and concluded that Pro likely remains Google's best image model in practice. Blind pairwise votes reward prompt-following and polish at a glance; a product photographer notices scale.

The engineering constraints are tighter than on 2.1. Thinking cannot be switched off or tuned, which adds latency to every request. There is no context caching, function calling or structured output, and Google Image Search grounding and video-to-image generation are reserved for 2.1 and 3.1 Flash. Pro keeps an edge on references, taking 5 character images to 2.1's 4, plus 3 style images that 2.1 does not list.

The price gap narrows at the top resolution. A 2K image costs four times as much on Pro, but at 4K the ratio is about 2.1 to 1 ($0.24 against $0.113), so teams producing print-size assets pay proportionally less for Pro's realism than teams producing thumbnails.

Where it earns its place

  • An e-commerce studio producing 2,000 lifestyle shots a month for a homeware brand

Place real products into photoreal room scenes

Upload up to 6 product reference images and generate at 2K. At $0.134 an image that is about $268 a month, or $134 on Batch if overnight turnaround is acceptable; a person still checks scale and labels before anything ships.

  • A platform engineer adding image generation to a design SaaS

Decide whether Pro is worth wiring in next to Nano Banana 2.1

Route default requests to 2.1 at $0.0336 per 1K image and offer Pro as a premium realism option. Pro has no structured outputs or caching and its thinking is always on, so it suits an asynchronous queue better than an interactive canvas.

  • A brand marketing team making 4K campaign key art

Get print-resolution hero images with legible text from a brief

Generate at 4K for $0.24 an image, about twice 2.1's 4K price rather than four times. Fifty finished images a month is about $12 before retries, so the real cost is designer time spent on reruns, not the API bill.

Before you commit

Setup
A Gemini API key on a billed Cloud project and one generateContent call with an image size of "1K", "2K" or "4K" (capital K; lowercase is rejected). There is no free API tier, though search grounding can be tried in AI Studio.
Integrations
Gemini API and Batch API, Google AI Studio and the Gemini app, plus partner apps. The model page lists no support for caching, function calling, structured outputs, URL context or Priority inference.
Data and privacy
On paid Gemini API use Google says prompts and outputs are not used to improve its products but are logged for a limited, unstated period for abuse detection; search-grounded prompts are kept for 30 days. Every output carries a SynthID watermark.
Cost at scale
10,000 2K images a month costs $1,340 at standard rates or $670 on Batch, against $504 for the same volume on Nano Banana 2.1. Search grounding is free for 5,000 requests a month, then $14 per 1,000.
Limits
65,536 input and 32,768 output tokens per request. Rate limits are per project and shown only in AI Studio; Batch queues up to 2M tokens on Tier 1. No deprecation date is listed.

What's good

  • Reviewers still rate its colours and proportions above 2.1
  • 4K output, web search grounding and up to 14 reference images
  • Batch halves the price
  • Paid API prompts are not used for training

What's not

  • $0.134 per 2K image, four times Nano Banana 2.1
  • 11th on Artificial Analysis, below 2.1 and GPT Image 2.5
  • Thinking is always on and cannot be tuned
  • No caching, function calling or structured outputs

Best for

Teams producing a modest number of high-stakes photoreal images, such as hero shots and product scenes, who can absorb the per-image premium.
