What it is
Firefly is Adobe's generative AI app on the web and mobile, and the engine behind features like Generative Fill in Photoshop. It covers image generation and editing, video, sound effects, music and translation. Adobe's own Firefly Image Model 5 generates native 4-megapixel images and powers Prompt to Edit, where you describe a change in plain words; it left beta in March 2026.
Firefly also hosts partner models from Google, OpenAI, Black Forest Labs, Runway and others in the same interface. In 2026 Adobe opened Custom Models to paid individual users as a public beta on March 19 (trained on 10 to 30 of your images, 500 credits a run), launched the Firefly AI Assistant on April 27, and added video background removal in September.
Adobe says it has never trained Firefly on user content and that partner models are contractually barred from training on it too. IP indemnity applies only to enterprise customers and only to Adobe's own models.
Our review
Firefly's case rests on paperwork and placement more than picture quality. Adobe states that it has never trained Firefly on user content, writes that promise into its terms, and extends it to partner models by contract. For agencies and in-house brand teams answering to a legal department, that is often the deciding point, though the IP indemnity that makes it bankable is available only on enterprise agreements and covers only Adobe's own models.
The pricing is better than it first looks for editors and worse for video. On any paid plan, Generate Image, Generative Fill, Generative Expand and text to vector stay unlimited even after credits run out, so a retoucher on Standard at $9.99 rarely hits a wall. Video, audio and partner models all draw from monthly credits that do not roll over: Standard covers about 20 five-second clips, Pro about 40. Only Premium at $199.99 makes the Firefly Video Model unlimited.
Firefly is now a hub as much as a model. You can generate with Nano Banana or GPT Image and finish the result with Adobe's fill and expand tools in one subscription. On raw output, users on Reddit and design forums generally rank Firefly Image 5 behind Midjourney for looks and behind GPT Image and Nano Banana for following instructions, which is why the partner models get so much use.
For developers the picture is less open. The Firefly Services API is sold through enterprise agreements with a rate card that Adobe does not publish, so a team wanting to generate product images programmatically has to start with sales. Custom Models, still labelled beta for individuals and teams in October 2026, now work across Photoshop, Express and Illustrator, which is the more useful route for brand consistency.
Where it earns its place
A retoucher at a five-person e-commerce photo studio
Extend backgrounds and remove objects on hundreds of product shots a week
Generative Fill and Expand are unlimited on paid plans, so Standard at $9.99 a seat covers the volume; partner models and video would draw on the 2,000 monthly credits.
A brand manager at a consumer goods company with legal review
Produce campaign imagery that legal will clear
Use Adobe’s own models under an enterprise agreement to get IP indemnity, and keep partner models for internal moodboards only, since the cover does not extend to them.
A creative-ops engineer at a retailer
Generate localised banner variants programmatically
Firefly Services API under an enterprise contract; the rate card is private, so budget only after a sales quote. Custom Models trained on brand assets keep variants on style.
