What is Claude in Chrome?
Claude in Chrome is a browser extension from Anthropic that puts Claude in a side panel of Google Chrome and lets it act on web pages: reading, clicking links, typing, moving between pages and filling in forms, using the logins already in your browser. It can run tasks on a schedule (daily, weekly, monthly or yearly), save prompts as shortcuts, and pass a conversation on to the Claude desktop, mobile and web apps.
It started as a pilot with 1,000 Max subscribers in August 2025 and became generally available on every paid Claude plan on 26 August 2026. At that point Claude began acting on its own by default, with a classifier, the same mechanism as auto mode in Claude Code, checking each action against your request.
It runs only in desktop Chrome, not in other Chromium browsers or on phones. On Max, Ultra and Team plans the side panel runs as a Cowork session.
How much does Claude in Chrome cost?
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20/month ($17/month billed yearly) | |
| Max | $100/month | |
| Ultra | $200/month | |
| Team | From $20/seat/month billed yearly |
Included with paid Claude plans: Pro $20/month ($17/month billed yearly), Max $100/month, Ultra $200/month, Team from $20/seat/month billed yearly, and Enterprise. Not on the free plan. Anthropic publishes no separate usage allowance for the extension.
Is Claude in Chrome worth it?
Some jobs are not hard, just tedious: copying order numbers from one site into another, filling in the same supplier form every month, checking ten tabs for a price change.
Claude in Chrome does those jobs in the browser you already use. It sits in a side panel, reads the page, clicks, types and fills in forms, and because it uses your existing logins, it can reach anything you can. You can schedule a task to repeat daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, or save a prompt that works as a shortcut. It is included on every paid Claude plan from Pro at $20 a month.
Since general availability on 26 August 2026 it starts in a mode where Claude works without stopping. A separate classifier compares each action with your original request, blocks the ones that do not match and pauses to ask you when it needs approval. You can switch back to approving every step in settings, and the extension remembers your choice.
Anthropic publishes unusually detailed attack numbers. In its pilot a year earlier, deliberately planted instructions on web pages succeeded 23.6% of the time with no defences. Against its current set of attacks from professional red-teamers, Anthropic reports 0% success for Sonnet 5, Opus 5 and Mythos 5 with its probes and classifier, and 0.3% for Fable 5. Those are Anthropic's own tests, and the company still calls the extension risky.
The catch: the extension holds a lot of power. It asks for 15 Chrome permissions, including the debugger, which lets it click, type and take screenshots, and it works inside every account you are signed in to. In May 2026 SecurityWeek reported LayerX's ClaudeBleed research, which showed that another extension with no special permissions could feed Claude commands through claude.ai; according to that report Anthropic's fix only partly closed the hole.
There are practical limits too. It works only in desktop Chrome, background tasks stop when Chrome closes, and anything involving local files still needs the Claude desktop app.
Our take: a second Chrome profile with only the sites a task needs costs you two minutes and turns this from a risk into a useful assistant.
Where it earns its place
An office manager at a 12-person architecture practice
Re-order the same supplies from three supplier portals every month
A scheduled monthly task uses the saved browser sessions to fill the carts; switching to the mode that asks before each action keeps the final payment step with a person.
A web developer using Claude Code
Check that a change works in a real browser without switching windows
Claude Code can drive Chrome through the extension, an integration Anthropic added in December 2025, so it can try the app it is building in a real, signed-in browser.
An IT lead at a 200-person company on Claude Enterprise
Allow the extension without exposing finance systems
Enable it in Organization Settings, restrict it to an allowlist of approved domains and block internal finance tools; Enterprise side panels stay on the classic experience until an owner turns on the new one.
