Google AI Studio

Google's free workbench for the Gemini API: test prompts, get a key, and build and deploy small apps with a coding agent.

4.4/5

Google AI Studio is the cheapest way to start building on a frontier model, as long as you keep anything private off the free tier.

What is Google AI Studio?

Google AI Studio is the browser workspace for Google's Gemini Developer API. You can try any Gemini model in a playground, compare prompts, create an API key and copy working code. The workspace itself is free; you pay only when a project moves to the paid tier of the API.

Build mode turns a description into a working web or Android app. Since March 2026 it has used the same coding agent as Google Antigravity, adds a Firebase database and Google sign-in when an app needs them, and deploys to Cloud Run with one click. At Google I/O on 19 May 2026 Google added native Android apps in Kotlin, Workspace integrations, one-click export to Antigravity and Managed Agents, a preview API that runs an agent in an isolated Linux sandbox.

The same keys reach the full model line-up: Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Flash-Lite, Nano Banana image models, Gemini Omni video, text to speech and embeddings.

How much does Google AI Studio cost?

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free tierFreeFlash and Flash-Lite models with daily request limits; prompts may be used to improve Google products
Gemini 4 Argon$2/$10 per 1M tokensRises to $4/$20 on 1 December 2026
Gemini 3.8 Flash$0.75/$3.75 per 1M tokensRises to $1.50/$7.50 on 1 January 2027

AI Studio is free. Gemini API free tier on Flash and Flash-Lite models; paid per token: Gemini 4 Argon $2/$10 per 1M input/output tokens until 30 November 2026, then $4/$20; Gemini 3.8 Flash $0.75/$3.75 until 31 December 2026, then $1.50/$7.50; Batch and Flex half price.

Is Google AI Studio worth it?

Getting your first working call to an AI model usually means a credit card, a cloud console and an afternoon of reading. AI Studio skips most of that: you sign in with a Google account, try a prompt, press a button for an API key and copy the code it shows you.

The free tier is generous by the standards of the big labs. Gemini 3.8 Flash, the Flash-Lite models, transcription, most text-to-speech voices and embeddings all have free quotas, so a side project or a classroom exercise can run for months without a bill. Gemini 4 Argon, the image models and Omni video are paid only.

Build mode is the part that has changed most this year. Describe an app and the Antigravity coding agent writes it, adds a Firestore database and Google sign-in when the app needs them, and puts it on Cloud Run with one click. When the project outgrows the browser, one button moves it into Antigravity on your own machine.

Read the price dates carefully. Argon costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output until 30 November 2026, then doubles to $4 and $20. Gemini 3.8 Flash is on an introductory $0.75 and $3.75 until 31 December 2026, then $1.50 and $7.50. Thinking tokens bill as output, and Batch and Flex halve the rates. Search grounding gives 5,000 free requests a month, then $14 per 1,000.

The catch: free means your prompts help train Google's products. Google's terms say free-tier input and output are used to improve its models and may be read by human reviewers, and they tell you not to submit sensitive or personal information. Paid projects are not used that way. If your app serves people in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, the terms allow only the paid service.

Spending is capped in a way that surprises new teams. A first paid project (Tier 1) is limited to $250 in total and $10 in any ten-minute window; you reach Tier 2 after $100 of Google Cloud spend and three days, and Tier 3 after $1,000 and 30 days. Limits apply per project, not per key, and Google says published limits are not guaranteed.

Our take: for prototyping, AI Studio is close to free money; the moment real customer data is involved, it is a paid API like any other, and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform is where the contracts live.

Where it earns its place

  • A solo developer building a receipt-scanning side project

Get a working prototype without paying for an API

Use a free API key with Gemini 3.8 Flash for image reading, within the daily free quota, and switch the project to paid only when real users arrive, at $0.75 per million input tokens until the end of 2026.

  • A product manager at a 30-person startup

Show investors a clickable app before an engineer is hired

Describe the app in Build mode; the agent adds Firestore and Google sign-in and deploys to Cloud Run with one click. Cloud Run needs a billing account, and the code can be exported to Antigravity or GitHub for an engineer to take over.

  • A data team running nightly document classification

Classify 2 million support emails a month as cheaply as possible

Send the job through the Batch API, which halves the Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite rate to $0.15 per million input tokens and $1.25 output, on a paid project so the emails are not used for training.

Before you commit

Setup
Sign in with a Google account, create a key in a minute and copy the generated code; paid use needs a linked Google Cloud billing account.
Integrations
The Gemini API and its SDKs, the Interactions API for Managed Agents, Firebase and Cloud Run from Build mode, Workspace APIs inside built apps, and export to Antigravity or GitHub.
Data and privacy
Free tier: prompts and responses are used to improve Google products and may be read by human reviewers after being disconnected from your account. Paid tier: not used to improve products; prompts are logged for a limited period for abuse detection. Which AI tools train on your data?
Cost at scale
Tier 2 needs $100 of spend and three days, Tier 3 $1,000 and 30 days; spend caps run from $2,000 at Tier 2 to $20,000 to $100,000 or more at Tier 3, and Priority requests cost about 1.8 times Standard.
Limits
Limits apply per project and reset at midnight Pacific time; Tier 1 has a $10 spend limit per ten minutes, and search grounding is capped at 1,500 requests a day per project.

What’s good

  • Free quotas on Gemini 3.8 Flash, Flash-Lite, transcription and embeddings
  • Build mode writes, hosts and deploys apps with Firebase and Cloud Run
  • One-click export of a project into Antigravity
  • Batch and Flex at half price; paid data is not used for training

What’s not

  • Free-tier prompts train Google's models and may be read by reviewers
  • Argon doubles in price on 1 December 2026, Flash on 1 January 2027
  • Tier 1 projects capped at $250 total spend
  • Free tier not allowed for apps serving the EEA, Switzerland or UK

Best for

Developers and students who want to prototype on Gemini models for free and move to paid API keys when a project gets real users.
