Our rating

4.3/5

Suno still makes the most convincing whole songs from a prompt, but since September you are paying for downloads as much as for generations.

What it is

Suno turns a short prompt or your own lyrics into a complete song with vocals, instruments and structure. You can extend songs, rewrite a section or a single lyric with a plain-English instruction, split a track into stems (separate vocal and instrument tracks) and keep working on it in Suno Studio, its browser-based editor, which is included with Premier.

Suno settled with Warner Music Group in November 2025 and launched v6 on September 9, 2026, in three variants: v6 and V6-Wild for paying subscribers and v6-mini for everyone. Older models were retired. Suno says v6 was trained from scratch on material licensed from Warner, BMG and Believe. Universal and Sony filed a second lawsuit on September 18, 2026, arguing v6 is still built on their recordings, and a Munich court ruled for the German rights society GEMA in July.

Since September 3, 2026, downloads are capped: 20 songs a month on Pro and 60 on Premier. Free users get no monthly downloads and no commercial rights.

Our review

Suno remains the strongest consumer song generator, and its rivals have mostly stepped back: Udio switched off track downloads after its deal with Universal, which leaves Suno as the big name that still lets you take finished audio out of the app. Reviews of v6 describe cleaner vocals and mixes than v5, and line-level lyric edits save regenerating a whole song to fix one phrase.

The limiting number has changed. Pro's 2,500 monthly credits produce far more drafts than its 20 downloads can export, so for most paying users the download cap now runs out first. The terms make the cap matter more: you may only use output commercially if you downloaded it through an approved channel, so a song you cannot download is a song you cannot sell. The pricing page sells extra downloads but does not show what they cost.

Ownership is better than it looks and narrower than it sounds. On paid plans Suno assigns you its rights in the output and those rights survive cancellation, but it also states that it makes no promise any copyright will exist in a generated song. Remixes of other users' songs stay non-commercial on every tier. In the other direction, uploading a voice memo or your own vocals grants Suno a perpetual, irrevocable licence to train on it, including your voice and likeness, with no opt-out in the terms.

The legal picture is less risky than in 2024, not settled. Warner and BMG have signed; Universal and Sony's new complaint covers 60,202 recordings and calls v6 the fruit of the same poisoned tree. Suno began watermarking songs in August, six days after the GEMA ruling, which means distributors and platforms can now tell what came from Suno and from which tier.

Where it earns its place

  • A two-person YouTube studio publishing three videos a week

Get original background tracks without licensing stock music

Pro at $8 a month billed yearly gives 20 downloads, which covers about 12 to 15 videos plus a few spares. Downloaded tracks carry commercial rights that survive cancellation; Content ID claims on platforms are governed by the platform, not Suno.

  • A marketing manager at a regional retail chain

Produce seasonal jingles and in-store audio quickly

Drafts are cheap in credits, so the team can iterate on lyrics and style before exporting the final versions. The pending Universal and Sony suit and the GEMA ruling are a reason to run broadcast use past legal first.

  • A songwriter preparing demos for co-writers

Turn a voice memo and lyrics into a full arrangement

Upload the memo, generate on v6, then export stems on Premier. The catch is the upload licence: Suno may train on that vocal and melody perpetually, so unreleased material is exposed.

Before you commit

Setup
Sign up in the browser and generate a first song in a minute or two; Studio needs Premier.
Integrations
No public developer API is published; output leaves the app only as downloads in approved formats, and stream ripping is prohibited by the terms.
Data and privacy
Uploads grant Suno a perpetual, irrevocable licence to train its models, including on your voice and likeness; outputs are watermarked and tagged by plan tier. No SOC 2 or enterprise privacy terms are published.
Cost at scale
A channel needing 50 finished tracks a month must be on Premier at $24 a month billed yearly, since Pro stops at 20; going past 60 means buying add-on downloads at a price the pricing page does not show.
Limits
Included credits expire each period; bought credits need an active subscription. Old songs now extend or remix on v6 only, since earlier models were retired.
