What it is
Surfer moved from surferseo.com to surfer.ai in October 2026, dropping 'SEO' from its domain, and now sits in France's Positive group of marketing software, where its pages brand it Positive Surfer. The old domain redirects.
The core is still the Content Editor, which compares a draft with top-ranking pages and scores it on terms, headings, length and structure, alongside AI drafting, page audits and topic planning. The newer focus is AI search: AI Tracker monitors how often your brand appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, with visibility, share of voice and sentiment, and a separate AI Search Analytics plan sells that alone.
In October 2026 Surfer's MCP server left beta for Pro, Peace of Mind and Enterprise, letting Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT or Codex run its tools. Plans are sized by documents, tracked prompts and seats.
Our review
Surfer's value is still the Content Editor. It turns vague SEO advice into a concrete score and term list, and it works inside Google Docs and WordPress, so a team publishing dozens of articles a month gets consistent structure without a senior editor on every draft. The October 2026 WordPress plugin update brought it level with the main app.
The score is a guide, not a goal. Google has repeatedly warned against content written to match keyword patterns, and SEOs on Reddit report that high Surfer scores do not guarantee rankings. The AI writer produces usable drafts that still need someone to add first-hand expertise.
AI search tracking is where the plan line-up gets awkward. Discovery tracks no prompts and Standard tracks 25, refreshed weekly, on ChatGPT alone. Only Pro and above track 50 or more prompts daily across all five AI surfaces. Surfer's own October data study found that answers scraped from chat interfaces and answers returned by the APIs overlap by barely 30%, which is a reminder that any visibility score depends on how it was collected.
For engineers, the MCP server at mcp.surferseo.com signs in with a Surfer account and exposes the full toolset, including skills that write or refresh a page and publish through a connected CMS. The plan cards list a full API only on Peace of Mind at $299 a month. A team that wants Surfer data in its own dashboards is therefore buying the top self-serve tier, not Pro.
Where it earns its place
An eight-writer content team at a SaaS company
Keep 40 blog posts a month to a consistent on-page standard
Writers draft in Google Docs with the Surfer extension and aim for the score as a floor, not a target. Pro at $2,184 a year covers 5 seats and 360 documents; more writers means Peace of Mind at $3,588 for 10 seats.
The head of marketing at a mid-sized e-commerce brand
Find out how ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews describe the brand against competitors
AI Search Analytics at $82 a month billed yearly tracks 50 prompts daily across five AI surfaces, with share of voice and sentiment, without paying for the Content Editor.
A growth engineer at a 15-person agency
Let Claude or Cursor run audits and page refreshes for clients
Point the MCP client at mcp.surferseo.com/mcp and sign in; skills can rewrite a page and publish through a connected CMS. MCP needs Pro or above; the API for custom reporting is listed only on Peace of Mind.
