Our rating

3.6/5

A gentle, plain-spoken first stop for over-50s curious about AI, whose free lessons are easier to trust than a business that publishes no company name.

What is WellWired?

WellWired is a British website that explains AI to people over 50 who did not grow up with computers. The free side has lessons of about ten minutes, a glossary, guides with prompts to copy for jobs such as writing letters or planning trips, a quiz of real scam messages, a scam checker you paste a suspicious text or email into, and a short chat with an AI assistant. There is also a guide for the family member doing the teaching. None of it needs an account.

The paid part is the Academy: 30 modules in six stages, which the site puts at 30 to 40 hours, with a short test after each module and a certificate at the end that the site says is not externally accredited. It costs £25 as a one-off payment, down from a usual £50, with lifetime access and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

The privacy policy and terms say the site is operated by Arthur Turing and give a postal address in Shoreditch, London, but no company name or company number. The on-site chat sends messages to OpenAI.

Is WellWired worth it?

If you are over 50, most writing about AI either assumes you already know what a chatbot is or warns you about scams and stops there. If you are the grown-up child who gets the worried phone calls, you have probably tried to explain it yourself and run out of patience on both sides.

WellWired, a British site, starts from nothing. Lessons take about ten minutes and nobody is timing you. The glossary defines a hallucination as "When an AI confidently makes something up that is not true", which is about the right level. The scam checker takes up to 4,000 characters of a suspicious text or email, explains the warning signs in plain words, and tells you to ring your bank on 159 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. A separate guide gives the family member a seven-step plan for the first sessions. All of this is free and needs no account.

The Academy costs £25 once, down from a usual £50; the site gives no end date for the offer. For that you get 30 modules in six stages, which the site puts at 30 to 40 hours, a test of eight questions after each module, and a certificate the site itself says is not externally accredited. The terms promise a full refund for any reason if you email within 14 days.

The catch: it is hard to know who you are paying. The privacy policy and terms, both last updated 19 February 2026, say the site is "operated by Arthur Turing" and give a Shoreditch postal address, but no company name or number, and we found no Companies House record linked to it. The team page lists three people with job titles but no credentials or work history. Chat messages go to OpenAI; WellWired says it does not store them and uses OpenAI in a way that does not train its models, but does not say how long OpenAI keeps them. The scam checker promises not to save what you paste, yet the privacy policy does not mention the checker or say which AI reads it. Apart from directory listings that look self-submitted and the founder's own post on DEV, we found no independent coverage.

Our take: the free lessons and the scam checker are a good bookmark for a parent, as long as nobody types a bank detail or NHS number into them. The Academy is a small bet with the refund behind it, but it is a bet on one person you cannot look up, so pay by card and keep the receipt.

Where it earns its place

  • A 72-year-old who has never opened a chatbot

Find out what AI actually is without feeling rushed or talked down to

Read a few ten-minute lessons, then try the on-site chat, which needs no account. The demo is capped (6 messages of up to 280 characters when we looked), so it is a taste; the next step is a free ChatGPT or Gemini account.

  • An adult child living two hours from a parent

Give a parent somewhere to check a suspicious text before replying

Bookmark the scam checker on the parent's phone. It is free, needs no sign-up and says it does not save what is pasted. It explains the warning signs and gives 159 and Action Fraud's number, but it is a second opinion, not a guarantee; anything about money still means calling the bank.

  • A retired couple who want a structured course over the winter

Work through AI properly, from first chat to everyday uses

Start with the free five-minute Academy preview, then pay £25 for 30 modules and 30 to 40 hours of material. The certificate is for your own satisfaction rather than an employer, and the 14-day refund covers a change of heart.
