3.5/5

A well-engineered skill for making stickman explainers inside your coding agent, sold with a "100% free" line and a monetisation promise that neither the API bills nor YouTube's rules back up.

What is Stickman Video Director?

Stickman Video Director is a skill you install in an AI assistant. It has two modes. Director Mode writes a treatment, storyboards and a prompt per scene for clips of about 30 seconds to 3 minutes; you paste the prompts into a video generator such as Google Flow, Runway, Luma or Kling and edit the clips yourself in CapCut or Premiere. Autopilot Mode runs inside a coding agent such as Codex, Claude Code or Cursor and produces a complete file, aimed at narrated videos of 10 minutes or more, from illustrated scenes with pans, zooms, captions, voiceover and sound effects.

There are ten named looks: A1 to A6 for Director Mode and B1 to B4 for Autopilot. You approve the script and a 20-second preview with sound before the full render. The local renderer needs Node 20+ and FFmpeg; images and narration come from tools you connect, with optional adapters for the Gemini API. An optional finishing step drafts a thumbnail, five title options, a description and a pinned comment, and uploads nothing.

The repository is MIT licensed, was created in August 2026 and is tagged by date; the latest tag is v2026.11.4.

Is Stickman Video Director worth it?

Stickman Video Director is better built than its marketing suggests, and its marketing is the problem. The repository has 4,835 stars and 774 forks three months after its August 2026 start. Under the viral-channel language sits a careful renderer: Autopilot Mode validates that shots cover the narration without gaps, caches each shot, resumes after a crash, refuses to render a full film until you have approved a 20-second sample, and makes each paid Gemini API call once, with no automatic retries.

The "100% free" claim holds for the code and nothing else. The FAQ itself says you pay for your own API usage. Autopilot needs a coding agent with file and terminal access, and the author recommends Codex. Images come from your agent's built-in image tool or the Gemini API; at Google's listed rates Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image costs $0.0336 per 1K image, so 60 scene images is about $2, and Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS narration is about $0.00225 per 10 seconds until 31 December 2026, rising to $0.0045 from 1 January 2027. Director Mode moves the expensive part, the animated clips, to whichever video generator you choose. Small sums per video, but not free.

The catch: the README tells you the output is "completely original" and safe to monetise. YouTube does not judge it that way. Its monetisation policies, renamed in July 2025 from "repetitious" to "inauthentic" content, exclude "AI-generated content made with generic or unoriginal templates giving the impression of mass production" and "templated storylines", and a channel whose videos feel interchangeable loses monetisation for the whole channel. Ten fixed house styles used to fill a channel quickly is close to the pattern that rule describes. The reused content rule matters less here, since the tool makes new pictures rather than reposting other people's clips.

Against MoneyPrinterTurbo, the trade is clear. MoneyPrinterTurbo is a standalone app with a web UI, a REST API and batch files, built on stock footage. Stickman Video Director has no app of its own; it is instructions and scripts your agent follows, which gives consistent illustrated characters and a review step, at the price of depending on how well your agent and model behave.

Our take: a useful drafting tool for someone who will write the script, vary the format and treat each video as a piece of work. As a way to fill a channel with interchangeable uploads, it runs straight into the policy YouTube wrote for exactly that.

Where it earns its place

  • A secondary-school science teacher with a class YouTube channel

Turn a lesson outline into a 6-minute illustrated explainer

Install the skill in Claude Code, ask for Autopilot Mode in the B1 style, approve the script and a 20-second preview, then let it render. Narration through the Gemini TTS free tier and about 40 images through the API cost a dollar or two.

  • A two-person social media agency making short product stories

Storyboard a 30-second stickman ad and generate the clips ourselves

Director Mode writes the treatment and per-scene prompts; paste them into Runway or Kling, then cut in CapCut. The skill is free; the clips are billed by the video generator.

  • A history podcaster repurposing episodes for YouTube

Make a narrated long-form video from an existing episode script

Supply your own recorded narration and caption timings, choose the B2 colour hand-drawn look, and render locally with FFmpeg. Write and vary each episode yourself, since templated uploads risk YouTube's inauthentic content rule.

Before you commit

Setup
Ask your agent to install the skill from the GitHub URL; Autopilot then needs npm ci, Node 20+ and FFmpeg, and node scripts/autopilot.mjs doctor checks the setup.
Integrations
Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and other agents with file and terminal access; Gemini API for speech and images (GEMINI_API_KEY); optional openai-whisper for caption alignment; Google Flow, Runway, Luma or Kling for Director Mode clips.
Data and privacy
Rendering is local; script text, prompts and any reference images you pass go to the model and image or voice provider you choose. Nothing is uploaded to YouTube automatically.
Cost at scale
At Google's listed rates, narration costs about $0.00225 per 10 seconds with Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and images $0.0336 each with Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image; the agent subscription and your review time are the larger costs.
Limits
B subtitles allow one visible line; no default image model is set; results vary by agent and model; the bundled caption font covers Latin only.

What’s good

  • Autopilot renders a complete file with voiceover, captions and sound effects
  • Approval gate on a 20-second preview before the full render
  • Shot cache and resume after interruption
  • Paid API calls are single, explicit and never retried automatically
  • Ten documented styles with worked examples

What’s not

  • "100% free" ignores agent, image, voice and video generator costs
  • README's monetisation claims conflict with YouTube's inauthentic content policy
  • Results depend on the agent; the author tests mainly in Codex
  • Roadmap features are tied to star counts

Best for

Solo creators and small explainer studios who already use Codex or Claude Code and want a structured way to draft illustrated stickman videos they will edit and vary.
